Introduction1-6 Eaton 93PM Emergency Lighting UPS (20–40 kW, 480V Four Wire – UL 924) Installation and Operation Manual P-164000569—Rev 2 www.eaton.com/powerquality1.3 Battery SystemThe battery system provides emergency short-term backup power to provide safe lighting during powerinterruptions.1.3.1 Battery ConfigurationsThe Eaton 93PM 20–40 kW, Four Wire UL 924 UPS battery system uses external IBCs. The external IBCsprovide emergency lighting during power interruptions. The battery system is equipped with sealed lead-acid,maintenance-free batteries. External IBCs are available at 480V (240 cell).An external battery disconnect switch or tie point must be used when IBCs are located separate from the UPScabinet and wiring exceeds the number of battery terminals available.A supplemental 48 Vdc shunt trip signal for an external battery disconnect device (IBCs only) is provided by theUPS, but is not required for normal operation.1.3.2 Optional Thermal SensorThermal runaway protection for VRLA batteries can be provided by adding an optional thermal sensor to theexternal battery cabinet.The sensor is wired to the thermal sensor terminal and programmed to turn the charger off when a trip signalis received.The thermal sensor will maintain the trip state until it is reset by service. Service should be called to inspect thebatteries and reset the sensor in case of such an event.1.4 Basic System ConfigurationsThe following basic UPS system configurations are possible:l Single UPS with one to four external battery cabinets.l Single UPS with one to four external battery cabinets and accessory cabinets1.5 Using This ManualThis manual describes how to install and operate the Eaton 93PM 20–40 kW, Four Wire UL 924. Read andunderstand the procedures described in this manual to ensure trouble-free installation and operation. Inparticular, be thoroughly familiar with the LOAD OFF procedure (see paragraph 6.3.12).The information in this manual is divided into sections and chapters. The system, options, and accessoriesbeing installed dictate which parts of this manual should be read. At a minimum, Chapters 1 through 4and Chapter 6 should be examined.Read through each procedure before beginning the procedure. Perform only those procedures that apply to theUPS system being installed or operated.
