Introduction1.1 PurposeThis user manual is aimed at the Premises Managementresponsible for the fire alarm system and provides guidanceon how to operate the system, undertake routine testing,and filling in the log book as required by BS5839 part 1.After the system has been installed and commissioned bya Competent Person, the Premises Management for thesite must ensure that all users of the system have read thismanual and are trained on its use.1.2 DefinitionsPremises ManagementIs a delegated person or persons with specialist knowledgeand day-to-day control of the premises, the Fire System, andthe implementation of the fire procedures.Competent PersonIs a person with relevant current training and experience,and with access to the requisite tools, equipment andinformation, and capable of carrying out the defined task.A competent person is generally an employee from themanufacturer of the fire alarm system, an installer, or serviceengineer who is contracted to maintain the system.1.3 About the Eaton Conventional SystemWhat is a Conventional Panel?All conventional panels have the fire detection devices andmanual call points on zone circuits with separate circuits foractivating fire alarm devices.What are Zones?The premises that the fire alarm system is providingcoverage for is split into areas of fire detection called zones.The size of each zone is governed by BS5839 part 1 and willbe calculated when the fire system is being specified priorto installation.The number of zones required to provide coverage of theentire premises will govern the fire panel model required,2, 4 or 8 zones are available in the Conventional range.Under BS5839 part 1 a zone plan of the premises must becreated and should be positioned on, adjacent to or in closeproximity to the fire panel and repeater panels. The zoneplan should have North at the top of the plan and shouldideally be positioned on a North facing wall.
