22SmartCruise (Optional)EVT-300 SmartCruise (Optional)SmartCruise is an optional enhancement to the Eaton VORAD EVT-300 CWSsystem. SmartCruise is activated whenever the vehicle’s standard cruise con-trol system is activated and the EVT-300 is powered on. When SmartCruise isactive, the green “S/C” (SmartCruise) light in the upper right corner of theDriver Display Unit will illuminate or a headway control indicator will be evi-dent on an OEM proprietary - messaging center. The “RANGE” control knob (see Figure 8, page 13), adjusts the SmartCruise“following intervals”. The SmartCruise system will either maintain the selectedfollowing interval between the host vehicle and a vehicle ahead or, in the caseof no target vehicle, the set cruise control speed. The following interval takesprecedence over the set cruise control speed.Listed below are descriptions of the most common situations encounteredwhile using SmartCruise.• Cruise On and No Vehicle DetectedIf no vehicle is present in front of the vehicle (or if present andbeyond the range of the EVT-300 system), the vehicle will main-tain the speed selected by the cruise control.• Cruise On and Vehicle DetectedThe driver can adjust the SmartCruise following interval from2.25 to 3.25 seconds if enabled. See table on next page for fol-lowing interval in seconds versus following interval in feet, atvarious speeds.WARNING: SmartCruise does not replace an alert, trained driver.SmartCruise will not react to stationary objects and cannot bringthe vehicle to a complete stop. The driver still needs to use gooddriving practices to avoid an accident.
