28CS-310EXHaUST POrT CLEaningLevel 2Parts Required: As needed: Muffler gasket1. Remove air filter cover and remove spark plug lead.2. Place piston at top dead center. Remove muffler (A) and mufflergasket (B ).3. Use a wood or plastic scraping tool to clean deposits from cylin-der exhaust port.iMPOrTanTNever use a metal tool to scrape carbon from the exhaust port.Do not scratch the cylinder or piston when cleaning the exhaustport. Do not allow carbon particles to enter the cylinder.4. Inspect muffler gasket, and replace if damaged.5. Install muffler gasket and muffler.6. Tighten muffler mounting bolts (or nuts) to 60-80 in • lbf (70-90kgf • cm).7. Attach spark plug lead.8. Replace air filter cover.9. Start engine, and warm to operating temperature.10. Stop engine, and re-tighten mounting bolts (or nuts) to specifica-tions.aBSParK arrESTOr MUFFLEr• The spark arrestor muffler controls the exhaustnoise and prevents hot, glowing particles of car-bon from leaving the muffler.• Make sure the spark arrestor screen is in goodrepair and properly seated in the muffler.• Certain internal combustion engines operated onforest, brush, and/or grass-covered areas in thestates of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California,Minnesota, New Jersey and Maine, are requiredto be equipped with a spark arrestor.This requirement also applies to all U.S. ForestService lands. In some of these areas, the sparkarrestor system must be certified per USDA ForestService Regulation SAE J335.Check with your local or state authorities forspecific regulations in your area. Failure to followthese requirements is a violation of the law.
