Garmin G1000 Pilot’s Guide for the Socata TBM 850/900 190-00709-05 Rev. D410HAZARD AVOIDANCEWEATHER MAPPING AND INTERPRETATIONWEATHER DISPLAY INTERPRETATIONWhen evaluating various target returns on the weather radar display, the colors denote precipitationintensity and rates shown in the table.Weather Mode Color Intensity ApproximatePrecipitation Rate (in/hr.)Black < 23 dBZ < .01.Green 23 dBZ to < 32 dBZ .01 - 0.1.Yellow 32 dBZ to < 41 dBZ 0.1 - 0.5Red (GWX 68) 41 dBZ to < 50 dBZ 0.5 - 2Red (GWX 70) 41 dBz and greater 0.5 and greaterMagenta (GWX 68 only) 50 dBZ and greater > 2Table 6-11 Precipitation Intensity Levels (GWX 68 and GWX 70)A precipitation intensity scale appears on the Weather Radar Page (Figure 6-102). The colors shown on thescale correspond to the colors shown in Table 6-11.NOTE: The system does not display magenta for precipitation in GWX 70 installations, although magentaappears on the scale in Weather mode.Figure 6-102 Precipitation Intensity Scale on the Weather Radar PagethUnDeRstORmsUpdrafts and downdrafts in thunderstorms carry water through the cloud. The more severe the drafts, thegreater the number and size of the precipitation droplets. With this in mind, the following interpretationscan be made from what is displayed on the weather radar. Avoid these areas by an extra wide margin.• In areas where the displayed target intensity is red or magenta (indicating large amounts of precipitation),the turbulence is considered severe.• Areas that show steep color gradients (intense color changes) over thin bands or short distances suggestirregular rainfall rate and strong turbulence.
