7Getting StartedBacklighting/Simulator ModeTo turn on and adjust the backlighting:1. Press POWER and the Light and Contrast window will appear.2. Press POWER again and the user-defined level of backlighting will activate. You may adjust thislevel by pressing UP or DOWN on the ARROW KEYPAD. If you press POWER one more time, thebacklighting will be at the maximum setting.3. Press ENTER/MARK or QUIT when done.The backlight will now cycle through off, the user-defined, and maximum backlight levels byrepeatedly pressing the POWER key.The GPSMAP 162’s Status Page provides a visual reference of satellite acquisition, receiver status,date, time and position coordinates. Each page of the GPSMAP 162’s system also features an optionsmenu, giving you access to other functions and features related to the specific page you are viewing. Toget a feel for how the options menus work, let’s put the GPSMAP 162 into simulator mode.To place the GPSMAP 162 in simulator mode:1. From the Status Page, press the MENU key. A menu of options and functions for the Status Pagewill appear.2. Press UP DOWN on the ARROW KEYPAD to highlight the ‘Start Simulator’ option and pressENTER/MARK.3. Press the ENTER/MARK key to confirm the ‘Running Simulator’ message that appears at thebottom of the display.Once the simulator has been started, the status field at the top of the page will display a ‘SimulatingNavigation’ status. Now you’re ready to continue the rest of the simulated tour.The GPSMAP 162 does not track satellites in simulator mode, and this mode shouldnever be used for actual navigation.All the waypoint and route planning done in simulator mode will still be retained in memoryfor future use.Press UP or DOWN on the ARROWKEYPAD to move the backlightingslider up for brighter or down fordimmer backlighting..When the unit is in simulator mode,an ‘S’ will appear in the lower leftcorner of every screen and the Satel-lite Page will show “Simulating Navi-gation.”Iwww.reelschematic.comwww.reelschematic.com
