majority of the continental United States and portions of Alaska.WAAS is just one service provider that adheres to the MinimumOperational Performance Standard (MOPS) for global SatelliteBased Augmentation Systems (SBAS).All SBAS systems use the same receiver frequency; therefore, anyoperational SBAS system may be capable of providing your GPSunit with increased accuracy at any location in the world.Currently, enabling WAAS on your Garmin GPSMAP 580/585 inregions not supported by ground stations may not improve accuracy, even when receiving signals from an SBAS satellite. To enable WAAS, go to GPS tab and press Menu selecting “EnableWAAS”.Digital Selective CallingDigital Selective Calling (DSC). DSC uses marine VHF radio GPStechnology to transmit and receive location information. DSC isused by mariners to assist them in two major areas: Distress Callsand Position Reporting.A non-emergency DSC Position Report allows mariners to exchangeand show their position. When you receive a DSC position, you cancreate a waypoint or to show the received position on an electronicmap. An emergency DSC Distress Call allows a vessel to transmit asubstantial amount of information in a single transmission, or “call,”without the need for voice communication. When nearby marinersor rescue teams receive the DSC signal, an alarm sounds, and theyimmediately receive the position of the caller. The mariner or rescue team can navigate (Go To) the caller’sposition or forward the call to the Coast Guard. When the CoastGuard receives the call, they can immediately access the caller’sinformation (such as who they are and the type of vessel) in theirdatabase while they are in transit to the caller’s location.84 GPSMAP 580/585 Owner’s ManualAppendix
