18 HARDI ® GAS ENGINE ESTATE SPRAYER OPERATOR’S MANUAL6.0 CALIBRATIONWARNING:ALWAYS CALIBRATE YOUR SPRAYER WITH CLEANWATER ONLY! WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING SUCH AS RUB-BER GLOVES, GOGGLES AND COVERALLS.Why must you calibrate a sprayer?A nozzle selection chart will tell you what application rate you shouldexpect. Variations due to nozzle wear, errors in pressure adjustment, and tractor speedometer can result in a large error in application rate. How do you calibrate a sprayer?Calibration kits are available from HARDI ®, #818493 for U.S. Gallonsand #818492 for metric calibration. For accurate calibration, thesprayer is driven a specific distance at spraying speed and the lengthof time is recorded. The operator then measures the amount of watersprayed from one nozzle at spraying pressure for the same length oftime noted. The amount of water sprayed provides a direct reading ofapplication rate. Slight adjustments are then made by varying thepressure. Here are some tips to remember when using the calibration kit method:1. Calibrate with clean water only.2. Follow the instructions in the calibration kit carefully.3. Before calibration, check the flow of each nozzle. If it puts out morethan 10% of its original volume, replace it.4. When determining the length of time required to drive a recom-mended distance, drive in actual field or lawn conditions with a half fullsprayer. Repeat the test several times, then take the average of thetimes recorded.5. Calibration of the sprayer should be completed at the beginning ofthe season and repeated every 2 to 3 full days of spraying, and everytime you change volume rate or use different nozzles.NOTE: A Calibration & Nozzles Manual (HARDI ® ref. no. 67000103) isavailable from your HARDI® dealer which contains more detailedinformation for calibration and nozzle selection.
