This input passes the inputfrom the source directly through to the volumecontrol without any analog to digital conversionand it mutes the unused input jacks to preventunwanted noise from interfering with systemperformance.Note that when the 6-Channel or 8-ChannelDirect Input is in use, you may not select asurround mode, as the external decoder deter-mines the processing in use. In addition, there isno signal at the record outputs or bassmanagement when the 6-Channel or 8-ChannelDirect Input is in use and the tone or balancecontrols will not function.Controls and Use of Headphones• Adjust the volume to a comfortable level usingthe front panel Volume Control ı or remoteVolume Up/Down buttons.• To temporarily silence all speaker outputspress the Mute button . Press the Dolby Mode SelectButton M or the Surround Mode GroupSelector 5 to cycle through the three DolbyHeadphone modes to select the one that youprefer.Surround Mode SelectionOne of the most important features of theAVR 247 is its ability to reproduce a full multi-channel surround sound field from digitalsources, analog matrix surround encodedprograms and standard stereo or even monoprograms.Selection of a surround mode is based onpersonal taste, as well as the type of programsource material being used. For example, CDs,motion pictures or TV programs bearing the logoof one of the major surround-encodingprocesses, such as Dolby Surround should beplayed in either the Dolby Pro Logic II or IIxMovie (with movies) or Music (with music)surround mode, with any DTS NEO:6 mode orwith Harman Kardon´s exclusive Logic 7 MovieMode, to create a full range 5.1 channel or (withLogic 7 and DTS NEO:6) even 7.1 channelsurround signal from surround encodedprograms, with a stereophonic left and right rearsignal, just as it was recorded (e.g. sound beingrecorded from left rear side will be heard fromthat side only, for more details see chart on page35-36).Note that when Dolby Digital 2.0 signals (e.g."D.D. 2.0" tracks from DVD), that are encodedwith Dolby Pro Logic information, are receivedvia any digital input, the Dolby Pro Logic IIMovie mode will be selected automatically (inaddition to the Dolby Digital mode) and willdecode a full range 5.1 channel surround soundeven from those recordings (see also "DolbyDigital" on page 39).To create wide, enveloping sound fieldenvironments and defined pans and flyoverswith all analog stereo recordings select theDolby Pro Logic II Music or Emulation mode orHarman Kardon’s exclusive Logic 7 Music modefor a dramatic improvement in comparison tothe Dolby Pro Logic (I) mode of former times.NOTE: Once a program has been encoded withmatrix surround information, it retains thesurround information as long as the program isbroadcast in stereo. Thus, movies with surroundsound may be decoded via any of the analogsurround modes such as Pro Logic II or IIxCinema, Logic 7 Cinema or DTS Neo:6 Cinema, when they are broadcast via conventional TVstations, cable, pay-TV and satellite transmission. In addition, a growing number of made-for-televi-sion programs, sports broadcasts, radio dramasand music CDs are also recorded in surroundsound. You may view a list of these programs atthe Dolby Laboratories Web site atwww.dolby.comEven when a program is not listed as carryingintentional surround information, you may findthat the Dolby Pro Logic II or IIx Music, DTSNEO:6 Music or Logic 7 Music or Enhancedmodes often deliver enveloping surroundpresentations through the use of the naturalsurround information present in all stereorecordings. However, for stereo programs without anysurround information the Theater, Hall and 5/7CHStereo modes should be tried (effectiveparticularly with old ”extreme” stereo recordings)and for mono programs, we suggest that you trythe Theater or Hall modes. And when you use onlytwo front channel speakers you should select anyof the Dolby Virtual Speaker surround modes, delivering a virtually three dimensional soundspace with two speakers only.Surround modes are selected using either thefront panel controls or the remote. To select anew surround mode from the front panel, firstpress the Surround Mode Group SelectorButton 5 until the desired major surroundmode group such as Dolby, DTS or Logic 7 isselected. Next, press the Surround ModeSelector Button 9 to choose the specificindividual surround mode.To select a surround mode using the remotecontrol, press the button for the major surroundmode group that includes the mode you wish tochoose from: Dolby M, DTS Surround N,DTS Neo:6 , Logic 7 O, Stereo orDSP Surround A. The first press of the but-ton will show the current mode from that groupif it is already in use, or the first available modeif you are currently using another mode. To cyclethrough the available modes in that group pressthe button again until the desired mode appearsin the Main Information Display Ò and theon-screen display. To select from the DSP modes (Hall 1, Hall 2,Theater) press the Surround Mode SelectorA repeatedly to scroll through the list ofavailable modes. As the surround modes change, a blue LED willlight next to the current mode in the SurroundMode Indicators ( list on the front panel.Note that the Dolby Digital or DTS modes mayonly be selected when a digital input is in use. Inaddition, when a digital source is present, theAVR will automatically select and switch to thecorrect mode (Dolby Digital or DTS), regardlessof the mode that has been previously selected. For more information on selecting digital sources, see the following section of this manual. When the 6-Channel/8-Channel direct inputs arein use there is no surround processing, as these
