SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONSYSTEM CONFIGURATION20 SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONwith two-channel music, surround-encoded programsor standard two-channel programming of any type, respectively. For 6.1/7.1 configurations, the Music andCinema modes may be selected. The Logic 7 modesare not available when either Dolby Digital or DTSdigital soundtracks are in use. See page 29 for acomplete explanation of the Logic 7 modes. On the DSP (SURR) menu, the choices madewith the ‹/› Buttons o on the remote select fromone of the DSP surround modes that are designed foruse with two-channel stereo programs to create avariety of sound field presentations. The choices avail-able are Hall 1, Hall 2, Theater, VMAx Near and VMAXFar. The Hall and Theater modes are designed formultichannel installations, while the two VMAX modesare optimized for use in delivering a full surround fieldwhen only the front left and front right speakers areinstalled. See page 29 for a complete explanation ofthe DSP surround modes. On the STEREO menu, the choices made withthe ‹/› Buttons o on the remote may eitherturn the surround processing off for a traditional two-channel stereo presentation, or select 5 STEREOor 7 STEREO depending on whether the 5.1 or6.1/7.1 output is in use. The latter modes feed a two-channel presentation to all speakers, regardless of thenumber of speakers in use. See page 29 for a com-plete explanation of the 5 Stereo and 7 Stereomodes. To listen to a stereo source without any bass manage-ment, so that the left and right speakers receive a full-range signal straight through from the input gain sec-tion to the volume control, press the ‹/› Buttonso so that SURROUND OFF is shown. Tolisten to two-channel sources with the bass manage-ment settings that will be established in the nextsection, press the ‹/› Buttons o so thatSURROUND OFF DSP is shown. After the selections are made on the Dolby, DTS,Logic 7, DSP (Surround) or Stereo menus, press the⁄/¤ Buttons n so that the cursor moves to theBACK TO MASTER MENU line and pressthe Set Button p.Automated Speaker Setup Using EzSet+The AVR 335 is one of the first receivers in its class tooffer automated speaker setup and system calibration. This process greatly simplifies the installation of yournew receiver by using a series of test signals andthe power of an advanced digital signal processingsystem to eliminate the need for manual adjustmentof speaker “size”, crossover, delay and output levelsettings. With EzSet+ your new receiver even alertsyou to errors in speaker connections that prevent aspeaker from functioning. With EzSet+ you are able to calibrate your system in afraction of the time it would take to enter the settingsmanually, and with results that rival those achieved withexpensive test equipment and time-consuming proce-dures. The end result is a system calibration profilethat enables your new receiver to deliver the best pos-sible sound, no matter what type of speakers you haveor what the dimensions of your listening room are.We recommend that you take advantage of the preci-sion of EzSet+ to calibrate your system, but if desiredyou may also make any of the configuration settingsmanually, or trim the settings provided by EzSet+ byfollowing the instructions on pages 22 through 26.If you wish to configure your AVR manually, or if forsome reason your EzSet+ microphone is unavailable, you may still do so by following the instructions onpages 22 through 26.Step 1: EzSet+ requires that your listening room haveas little background noise as possible to avoid interfer-ing with the measurement of tones produced by yourAVR during the setup procedure. Turn off all loud fans, air conditioners and other equipment, and try to avoidmaking any noise during the process.Step 2: The EzSet+ microphone should be placed ineither your usual listening position or, if there is a largeseating area, the center of the room, at the listeners’ear level. You may find it convenient to use a cameratripod for stable placement of the EzSet+ microphoneat the correct height. The microphone includes athreaded insert on the bottom for tripod mounting.Step 3: Plug the EzSet+ microphone into theAVR 335’s Headphone Jack 4, making certainthat the mini-plug to 1/4" phone plug adaptor sup-plied with the microphone is firmly connected. Themicrophone cable is approximately 20 feet long, which should accommodate most listening room situa-tions. If required, you may use an optional extensioncable, available at most electronics stores, for use inlarger rooms. However, we recommend that you avoidusing extension cords for the microphone cable, asthey may adversely affect the test results.Step 4: Once the microphone is properly positionedand plugged in, proceed to the EzSet+ menus byfirst pressing the OSD Button v to bring theMASTER MENU to the screen. Next, press the⁄/¤ Navigation Buttons n to move the on-screen cursor to the EzSet+ menu line. Pressthe Set Button p to move to the next screen(Figure 5).Step 5: The first screen of the EzSet+ system willnow appear to remind you to plug in the microphone. If you have not already done so, plug the microphoneinto the Headphone Jack 4 as described in steps2 and 3. When you are ready to proceed, make cer-tain that the cursor is pointing to YES and press theSet Button p. If you do not wish to continue withthe EzSet+ process, press the ‹/› NavigationButtons o and then press the Set Button p toreturn to the MASTER MENU. Note that if youattempt to move to the next menu without plugging inthe microphone, a reminder message will flash at thebottom of the screen.Figure 5Step 6: After entering YES to start the EzSet+ sys-tem, you will next see a brief warning message, andthe screen will then change to the main EzSet+ menu. The WARNING screen is a reminder that in orderfor the system to perform accurate measurements, itis important that the listening room be as quiet aspossible. After 5 seconds, the screen will change againto display the main EzSet+ menu (Figure 6).IMPORTANT NOTE: Anyone with hearing that is sen-sitive to loud noises should leave the room at thispoint, or use ear protection sufficient to reduce thenoise level. Inexpensive foam-style ear plugs, availableat most drug stores, may be used to reduce the soundlevel to a tolerable level. If you are uncomfortable with,or cannot tolerate, loud sounds and do not use somesort of ear protection, we strongly recommend thatyou leave the room and ask someone else to run theEzSet+ process, or that you do not use EzSet+ andenter the configuration settings manually, as describedon pages 22 through 26.Step 7: The WARNING screen will automaticallybe replaced by the main EzSet+ menu (Figure 6).While this screen is visible, you may start and stop thecalibration process, or monitor the progress of themeasurements and view the results. When the screenfirst appears, you will see MEASUREMENT:STOP on the first line of the menu list. To start theEzSet+ test process, you must first tell the systemhow many speakers are in your system. To do that, choose one of these two options:• If your system includes a full complement of sevenmain speakers (front left/center/front right/surroundright/surround back right/surround back left/sur-round left) and a subwoofer, press the ‹/›Navigation Buttons o so that 7.1 appears tothe right of MEASUREMENT, and then pressthe Set Button p to start EzSet+.• If your system includes a traditional surround speakercomplement of five main speakers (front left/center/* E z S e t + * *P l a c e M i c r o p h o n e a tl i s t e n i n g p o s i t i o na n d p l u g i n t oH e a d p h o n e J a c kD o y o u w a n t t o s t a r tE z S e t + ?Y E S N O
