OPERATION32 OPERATIONWhen tuning FM stations in the Auto mode, the tunerwill only select stereo stations. To tune to the next sta-tion, press the button again. If the STEREO IndicatorH is not lit, tap the Tuning Selector Button 9ué to advance one frequency increment at atime, or press and hold it to locate a specific station.When the TUNED Indicator I lights, the station isproperly tuned and should be heard with clarity.5. Stations may also be tuned directly by pressing theDirect Button t, and then pressing the NumericKeys r that correspond to the station’s frequency.The desired station will automatically be tuned. If youpress an incorrect button while entering a direct fre-quency, press the Clear Button to start over.NOTE: When the FM reception of a station is weak,audio quality will be increased by switching to Monomode by pressing the Tuner Mode Button ^suntil the STEREO Indicator H goes out.Preset TuningUsing the remote, up to 30 stations may be stored inthe AVR 525’s memory for easy recall using the frontpanel controls or the remote.To enter a station into the memory, first tune the sta-tion using the steps outlined above. Then:1. Press the Memory Button on the remote.The MEMORY Indicator G will light and flash in theMain Information Display ˜.2. Within five seconds, press the Numeric Keys rcorresponding to the location where you wish to storethis station’s frequency. Once entered, the preset num-ber will appear in the Main Information DIsplay ˜.3. Repeat the process after tuning any additional sta-tions to be preset.Recalling Preset Stations• To manually select a station previously entered in thepreset memory, press the Numeric Keys r thatcorrespond to the desired station’s memory location.• To manually tune through the list of stored presetstations one by one, press the Preset StationsSelector Buttons $ © on the front panel orremote.Tape RecordingIn normal operation, the audio or video sourceselected for listening through the AVR 525 is sent tothe record outputs. This means that any program youare watching or listening to may be recorded simplyby placing machines connected to the outputs forTape Outputs or Video 1/Video 2 Audio andVideo Outputs ‡· in the record mode.When a digital audio recorder is connected to theDigital Audio Outputs ik(, you are able torecord the digital signal using a CD-R, MiniDisc or otherdigital recording system.NOTES:• The digital outputs are active only when a digital sig-nal is present, and they do not convert an analoginput to a digital signal, or change the format of thedigital signal. In addition, the digital recorder mustbe compatible with the output signal. For example,the PCM digital input from a CD player may berecorded on a CD-R or MiniDisc, but Dolby Digital orDTS signals may not.• Please make certain that you are aware of anycopyright restrictions on any material you copy.Unauthorized duplication of copyrighted materials isprohibited by federal law.Front-Panel ConnectionsIn addition to the rear panel digital and analog outputs,the AVR 525 offers Harman Kardon’s exclusive config-urable front-panel output jack feature. For easy con-nection of portable devices, you may switch the front-panel Video 4 Jacks Ó or the Coaxial Digital 3Jack ( from an input to an output by followingthese steps:1.Press the OSD Button v to view theMASTER MENU (Figure 1).2.Press the Set Button p to enter theIN/OUT SETUP menu (Figure 2).3.Press the ¤ Button n so that the on-screen ›cursor is next to VIDEO 4 or COAXIAL 3.4.Press the Set Button p and then press either ofthe ‹/› Buttons o so that the word OUTis highlighted.5.Press the Set Button p to enter the change.6.Press the OSD Button v to exit the menus andreturn to normal operation.Once the setting is made, the Input/Output StatusIndicator * will turn red, indicating that the jacksare now an output, instead of in the default setting asan input. Once changed to an output, the setting willremain as long as the AVR 525 is turned on, unlessthe setting is changed in the OSD menu system, asdescribed above. However, once the AVR 525 isturned off, the setting is cancelled. When the unit isturned on again, the front panel jacks will return totheir normal default setting as an input. If you wish touse their jacks as an output at a future time, the set-ting must be changed again using the OSD menu sys-tem, as described above.Output Level Trim AdjustmentNormal output level adjustment for the AVR 525 isestablished using the test tone, as outlined on pages24 and 25. In some cases, however, it may be desir-able to adjust the output levels using program materialsuch as a test disc, or a selection you are familiar with.Additionally, the output level for the subwoofer can onlybe adjusted using this procedure.To adjust the output levels using program material, firstset the reference volume for the front left and front rightchannels using the Volume Control ı î.If you are using a disc with test signals or an externalsignal generator as the source from which to trim theoutput levels, you may use the EzSet feature of theremote to guide you to the correct SPL level. To usethe remote for this purpose, press and quickly releasethe SPL Selector Button to activate the sensor.While the test tone is circulating, the Program/SPLIndicator c will change color to indicate the level.Adjust the level as shown above until the LED lightsgreen for all channels. When it is red the level is toohigh; when it is amber the level is too low. Press theSPL Selector Button to turn the sensor andindicator off.Once the reference level has been set, press theChannel Select Button m and FRONT LLEV will appear in the Lower Display Line B.To change the level, first press the Set Button p,and then use the ⁄/¤ Buttons n to raise orlower the level. DO NOT use the volume control,as this will alter the reference setting.Once the change has been made, press the SetButton p and then press the ⁄/¤ Buttons nto select the next output channel location that youwish to adjust. To adjust the subwoofer level, pressthe ⁄/¤ Buttons n until WOOFER LEVappears in the Main Information Display ˜ oron-screen display.Repeat the procedure as needed until all channelsrequiring adjustment have been set. When all adjust-ments have been made and no further adjustmentsare made for five seconds, the AVR 525 will return tonormal operation.41414037413835333534
