VCD PLAYBACKVCD PlaybackVCD, a video playback format that predates DVD, isbased on a different compression format than DVD anduses a recording method that is similar to CD. Althoughthe DVD has, for the most part, replaced VCD as a for-mat, the DVD 37 offers VCD playback so that you mayplay your existing library of VCD discs, or home moviesthat you have recorded as VCDs on your computer. There are two versions of the VCD format: an earlyversion which is simply called “VCD” and a laterversion with Playback Control which is called “Version2.0” or “PBC.” The DVD 37 is compatible with bothforms of VCD, although playback will vary accordingto which version is used and the specific way in whichthe disc was created.Even though VCD discs provide video, because theformat is based on CD technology, the playbackfunctions for a VCD disc are similar to CD. To play aVCD disc, place it in the DVD 37 as you would dowith any other CD or DVD disc. The unit takes a fewseconds to read the disc’s contents; the VCD DiscType Indicator A in the front-panel display will lightand the disc will begin playing. However, keep in mindthat the exact level of functionality for any VCD will varywidely and it is ultimately determined by the way thedisc was created, not by the DVD 37, particularly if thedisc has been created under VCD Version 2.0 withPlayback Control (see “Playback Control”).When playing VCD discs, most standard DVD/CD play-back controls are used, including Play, Stop, Pause,Resume, Track Skip Forward and Reverse, SlowForward, Step Forward and Fast Forward. The ReverseSearch and Step Reverse functions are not availablewith VCDs.With VCDs, you have access to information on thedisc playing by pressing the Info Button 8 onthe remote. The availability of the Repeat and Random functionswill depend on whether PBC Support has been activatedusing the System Setup Submenu (see page 18). WithPBC Support on, Repeat and Random will not beavailable. Repeat A-B is always available. Simply pressthe Repeat A-B Button 6 once at the beginning ofthe passage to be repeated, again at the end of thepassage, and a third time to cancel Repeat A-B mode.Discs containing raw MPEG files, without playbackcontrol, are played in a different manner. When sucha disc is loaded, the Player Information menu willappear, with a list of folders or files, similar to an MP3disc. The disc directory is navigated using the stNavigation Buttons D. Press the Enter Buttonu to open or close a folder. Select the desiredtrack, and press the Play Button x or the EnterButton u to begin play. You will find that the Stop,Pause, Track Skip Forward and Reverse, Slow Forwardand Reverse, Step Forward and Reverse, and FastForward and Reverse Search functions are all avail-able, depending on how the disc was encoded. However, the Status Banner is not available for thesetypes of VCDs.Using the Status Bar for VCD PlaybackWhen playing VCD discs, it is possible to access thedisc’s features using the Status Bar. Press the StatusButton S to see the Status Bar. Note, however, thatwhen PBC is on, some features may not be availablewith that VCD.The Status Banner will appear the same as for DVDs(see Figure 14), except that the current and total num-ber of tracks will be shown, rather than titles, and thereis no chapter display. If PBC is off, you may select the track number andchange it to skip to another track. You may also beginplay from a specific time marker by selecting thenumeric time display and entering the desired startingpoint using the Numeric Keys T. You may alsochange the time display from Track Elapsed, to TrackRemaining, to Disc Elapsed, to Disc Remaining, andback to Track Elapsed, just as with DVDs. The elapsedtime will appear as a graphic temperature bar, withadditional lines added as more of the track or discis played.Zoom FunctionThe Zoom function is available for VCDs by pressingthe Zoom Button w. Repeatedly pressing this but-ton will cycle through the possible settings of 1x, 2xand 3x zoom.Playback ControlVCD discs made under the Revision 2.0 specificationwill usually offer PBC playback control. The PBC Indicator H in the front display will turn onautomatically with any VCD when the disc is played. With PBC, you can select titles and navigate the discas with DVDs. However, the access to some functionsmay be prohibited by PBC playback control; in thatcase, the prohibit icon will appear on screen. When the VCD is made without PBC, the disc can becontrolled the same as an audio CD, but direct trackaccess by entering a number is not possible withoutopening the On-Screen Banner Display. With PBC, many discs include chapter selection menusthat are similar to those found on DVDs. However, onVCD discs, the disc menu (if any) is accessed andcontrolled differently than on DVDs.• Play 2N will start with the first track (which maybe an intro), then leading to the VCD menu (if any)automatically.• Next (Skip Forward) 6Q will skip to the VCDmenu from the intro (Track 1) directly.• Once the menu options appear on the screen, makeyour selection by pressing the Numeric Keys Tthat correspond to your desired choice. The desiredselection will begin playing automatically.• Direct number entry without any VCD menu shownon-screen has no effect – even when the StatusBanner is on.The Disc Menu Button R used during DVD play-back is not used for VCD playback.Use of functions when PBC is on will vary according tothe disc type. Note that if the disc was created withPlayback Control (PBC) it is not possible to changetrack numbers directly.VCD PLAYBACK 35
