22 SYSTEM SETUPSystem SetupTV AspectThis step selects the TV aspect, conventionalscreen shape (4:3) or widescreen (16:9), accord-ing to your TV set: 4 x 3 letterbox: Choose this setting if theDVD5 is connected to a conventional (4:3) TVset and you would prefer to see movies intheir original aspect ratio. You will see theentire frame of the movie and DVDs recordedwith normal 4:3 format will fill the entirescreen. But movies in widescreen will occupya smaller portion of the screen, with blackbars at the top and bottom of the screen. 4 x 3 Pan Scan: Choose this setting if theDVD5 is connected to a conventional (4:3) TVset and you want widescreen movies to fillthe entire screen. Note that this setting iseffective only with some (less) specificwidescreen DVDs recorded with the Pan andScan mode. With those movies you won’t seeparts of the picture (particularly the right andleft edges). Most discs produced in a wide screen formatcan’t be cropped in this fashion, which meansthe black bars will further appear at the topand bottom of the screen (letterbox format). Some widescreen DVDs, particulary anamorphtypes (with full vertical line resolution), maybe shown with original width but spread ver-tically. With those disc the letter box formatmust be selected. Thus this selection is usefull only with someless specific DVDs, with all others the selec-tion of the letterbox format fits best. 16 x 9 Widescreen: Choose this setting if yourDVD player is connected to a widescreen TVor to a conventional (4:3) TV, set to wide-screen (16:9) mode. With this set up, discs recorded in 4:3 aspectratio will appear as a boxed image in the cen-ter, with black columns on the left and rightside of the screen. But true widescreen discs(anamorph recordings, i.e. those shownspread vertically when DVD5 is set to "4:3Pan Scan" mode, see above) will be shownoptimally, i.e. with full vertical resolution. Withsome 4:3 TVs, set to 16:9 format, discs with4:3 format may be played compressed verti-cally. With those discs the TV must be set to4:3 format. To select TV Aspect follow these steps:1.
