Color-Coding SystemThe HKS 3 and the HKTS 7 use the channelcolor-coding system established by theConsumer Electronics Association to makesetting up your home theater speaker sys-tem as easy as possible. Your systemincludes a set of colored stickers that maybe placed near the speaker terminals ofeach of the satellite speakers. In addition, theincluded speaker wires have colored bandsat each end to assist you in connecting themcorrectly. Use the brown sticker and cable forthe Surround Back Left speaker, and the tansticker and cable for the Surround Back Rightspeaker. Although the wires included withyour HKS 3 speakers are color-coded for theSurround Back Left and Right channels, theyare interchangeable with the wires suppliedwith the HKTS 7 system. It doesn’t matterwhich satellite speaker is used for any of thefront or rear positions. (The center speakerand powered subwoofer of the HKTS 7 arealready color-coded.)When Used as Front SpeakersFront speakers should be placed the samedistance from each other as they are fromthe listening position. They should be placedat about the same height from the floor asthe listeners’ ears, or they may be angledtoward the listeners. When Used as Surround SpeakersFor 5.1-channel applications, the twosurround speakers should be placed slightlybehind the listening position and, ideally, should face each other and be at a levelhigher than the listeners’ ears. If that is notpossible, they may be placed on a wallbehind the listening position, facing forward. In 7.1-channel systems, place the sidesurround speakers slightly behind the listeningposition, as shown in the diagram to the left. The surround back speakers should beplaced on the rear wall, facing forward, the same distance apart as the main frontspeakers. In 6.1-channel systems, you may use a pairof HKS 3 speakers for the surround backspeakers in place of a single rear centerspeaker. Using two speakers will provide amore diffuse surround effect, and will alsoincrease the total sound output for thesurround back channel without overworkingany individual speaker. Place the two speak-ers on the rear wall the same distance apartas each speaker is from the listener, but atleast four feet apart. The surround back speakers in a 6.1- or7.1-channel system should be placed at thesame height as the surround speakers, about5 to 6 feet above the floor. The surround speakers should not callattention to themselves. Experiment with theirplacement until you hear a diffuse, ambientsound accompanying the main-programmaterial heard in the front speakers.SPEAKER PLACEMENT 3SPEAKER PLACEMENTSurround SpeakersSurround Back Speakers(7.1-Channel System)Side Surround SpeakersSurround Back Speakers(6.1-Channel System)(place at least 4 feet apart)5 – 6 ft.
