SPEAKER CONNECTIONS 7Speaker-Level Connection GuideIMPORTANT NOTE: Before making speakerconnections, be certain that your receiveror audio power amplifier is turned off andpreferably unplugged from its AC powersource. The HKTS 6 should not be connectedto an AC power source until all speaker wireconnections have been made.Speakers and electronics terminals havecorresponding (+) and (–) terminals. Mostmanufacturers of speakers and electronics, including Harman Kardon, use red to denotethe (+) terminal and black for the (–) terminal.Newer Harman Kardon receivers conform tothe new CEA standard and therefore use acolor other than red or black for the (+) ter-minal to indicate some speaker positions:e.g., left surround. Although the HKTS 6system has red and black collars on theindividual speaker terminals to denote thepositive and negative connections, your sys-tem includes a colored band on the positivelead at each end of every speaker cableand a matching colored sticker for each ofthe four satellite speakers, conforming to thekey on page 5. The center speaker has agreen (+) terminal, and the subwoofer has apurple SUB input jack. This system isintended to help you ensure that the speakerin each location is connected to the correctterminals on your receiver or amplifier. The (+) lead of the speaker wire is indicatedwith both a stripe and the colored bandcorresponding to the speaker’s position. It is important to connect both speakersidentically: (+) on the speaker to (+) on theamplifier and (–) on the speaker to (–) onthe amplifier. Wiring “out of phase” results inthin sound, weak bass and a poor stereoimage. With the advent of multichannel surroundsound systems, connecting all of the speakersin your system with the correct polarityremains equally important in order to preservethe proper ambience and directionality of theprogram material. To connect the supplied speaker wires tothe satellite and center speaker terminals, press the red or black plastic tab for thedesired terminal, insert the bare end of thewire into the hole and release the tab. Gentlytug on the wire to make sure that it is fullyinserted.SPEAKER CONNECTIONS
