To select the mode that will be used when a discwith two-channel audio is playing, make certain thatthe mode name at the right side of the DVD SoundMode Command Descriptions Line is highlighted andthen press the Enter Button P. Use the M / NNavigation Buttons A to change the setting.Audio AdjustmentThe Audio Adjustment Submenu contains the speakerdelay and output level adjustment settings of theHS 100. Follow the explanations in the CommandOptions ∂ on the bottom of your screen to makeadjustments.DelayDue to the different distances between the listeningposition for the front and surround channel speakers, the amount of time it takes for sound to reach yourears from each set of speakers is different. You maycompensate for this difference through the use of thedelay settings to adjust the timing for specific speakerplacement in your particular home theater or listeningroom. Before proceeding, measure the distancebetween each speaker and the preferred listeninglocation.Next, press the M / N /K/L Navigation ButtonsA so that the second of the two AUDIO icons inthe Sub-Menus column ∫ is surrounded by a whiteoutline, with the icon box turning dark, rather than light, blue. This is the Audio Settings Menu. Next, press theM / N /K/L Navigation Buttons A until the dis-tance setting under the Front Left speaker title is high-lighted and press the Enter Button P. To changethe setting, press the M / N Navigation Buttons Aso that the number highlighted in the OptionsDescription line é at the bottom of the screen isthe distance from the speaker to the listening position.Press the Enter Button P when you are done.Press the M / N /K/L Navigation Buttons A tomove across the menu screen to each of the distancesettings under each of the rest of the speaker posi-tions, and repeat the procedure to enter the distancesetting. Note that distance setting for the subwooferdoes not need to be entered, as delay is not a factorwith low-frequency information.Output Level AdjustmentOutput level adjustment is a key part of the configura-tion process for any surround sound system.NOTE: Listeners are often confused about the operationof the surround channels. While some assume thatsound should always be coming from each speaker, most of the time there will be little or no sound in thesurround channels. This is because they are only usedwhen a movie director or sound mixer specificallyplaces sound there to create ambience, a specialeffect or to continue action from the front of the roomto the rear. When the output levels are properly set,it is normal for surround speakers to operate onlyoccasionally. Artificially increasing the volume to therear speakers may destroy the illusion of an envelopingsound field, which duplicates the way you hear sound ina movie theater or concert hall. For ideal surround playback, the output level from eachchannel should be equal, and in most cases the factorydefault setting of 0dB should accomplish that. However,in some cases the specifics of your listening room mayrequire some adjustments. To adjust the output levels, first put in a disc with test tones or content you arefamiliar with, and that has a reasonably even level with-out a great deal of changes. Then, press the M / N /K/L Navigation Buttons A until the output levelsetting with the factory default of “+0dB” at the bottomof the list under the Front Left speaker distance settingis highlighted. If an increase or decrease needs to bemade to the level, press the Enter Button P andthen use the M / N Navigation Buttons A sothat the desired level is highlighted in the OptionsDescription line é at the bottom of the menuscreen. Press the Enter Button P, and then pressthe M / N /K/L Navigation Buttons A to moveacross the menu screen to each of the output levelsettings under each of the rest of the speaker positions, and repeat the procedure to enter the output level off-set, if needed, that brings all of the channels to thesame output volume. You may need to repeat this pro-cedure more than once to accurately set the levels.Video SettingThis menu establishes the DVD’s configuration for videoformat settings such as aspect ratio and output scan.As with all setup menus, press the OSD Button yto activate the main menu screen, and then press theM / N Navigation Buttons k so that SETUPis highlighted. Press the Enter Button z, and thenuse the M / N /K/L Navigation Buttons k untilthe VIDEO SETUP menu is highlighted withina white outline, and press the Enter Button zagain. Your choice should be madeaccording to the shape of your video display and yourpersonal preferences. Three choices are available:• 16:9: If you have a widescreen (16:9) display, or adisplay that has a widescreen mode, choose this set-ting. With this setting, the HS 100 will adjust the out-put for widescreen movies so that they fill the entirescreen in the proper aspect ratio. Note, however, thatin this setting a disc recorded in the 4:3 aspect ratiowill appear in the widescreen as a boxed image inthe center, with black columns on the left and rightside of the screen. Note that if the widescreen optionis chosen and a widescreen movie is played on aconventional 4:3 aspect ratio set, the image will bedistorted due to vertical compression.• 4:3 Letterbox: If you have a standard, 4:3 aspectratio video display, choose this setting if you wish tosee the entire frame of the movie as it is recordedon the disc without any image cutoff at the left andright sides. While this allows widescreen movies tobe shown in their entirety, they will occupy a smallerportion of the screen and black “letterbox” bars mayappear at the top and bottom of the screen.• 4:3 PanScan: If you have a standard, 4:3 aspectratio video display and prefer to have widescreenmovies displayed without the black bars at the topand bottom of the screen, choose this option. Note, however, that since most DVDs do not contain spe-cial “pan/scan” coding that allows the on-screenimage to follow the action, you may find that whilethe image will fill the screen, the vertical spread willcause it to be cropped at the left and right side.Scan Type: This setting allows you to selectbetween progressive and interlaced scanning for theComponent Video Outputs ⁄ to maximize theimage resolution for the type of video display in use. When all desired setup and configuration entries havebeen made, press the OSD Button y to returnthe player to normal operation and you are ready toenjoy the finest in DVD or CD playback. Note that theoutput at the S-Video ‚ and Composite Video ªoutputs will always be standard-rate video that iscompatible with any television set or video display. Two choices are available:16HS100 Integrated Home Theater System harman/kardon |
