BASIC OPERATION 19BASIC OPERATIONBasic OperationOnce all connections have been made and the properconfiguration settings entered, you are ready to enjoythe incredible listening and viewing experience madepossible by the HS 100. The pages that follow have allthe information needed to operate the HS 100, but thefollowing will help get you started with a basic overview.• To turn on the HS 100, press the ON Button 0on the remote or the Power On/Off Button onthe front panel to use the input that was in use whenthe HS 100 was turned off.• The HS 100 may also be turned on with directaccess of a specific input by pressing the Player3, Radio 2, TV , Aux or Digital In buttons on the remote.• To select another input, press the Player 3,Radio 2, TV , Aux or Digital In buttons on the remote to choose the source.• Turn the Volume Control A or press the VolumeControl Buttons on the remote to raise orlower the volume.• To temporarily silence the output, press the MuteButton . Press the Mute Button again oruse the Volume Control A to return to normaloperation.• Control over the settings for an individual input, suchas DVD playback and navigation or using the tuner isdone through a combination of the on-screen menusand the remote control and front panel buttons.Í To access the menu for a specific input, pressthe OSD Button O, and then press the ‹/›Navigation Buttons A until the desired source(or the Setup menu for global system adjustments)is highlighted in a light blue box. Note that the cur-rent source will be shown with a white line belowits name while you select another source. Pressthe Enter Button P to select the highlightedsource.Í Consult the pages in this manual pertaining toeach input source for the specific instructionsabout using or configuring that source.Surround ModesOne of the most important features of the HS 100 isits ability to reproduce a multichannel surround presen-tation from digital sources, analog matrix-encodedsources or traditional two-channel stereo programmaterial. In some cases, such as when a Dolby Digitalor DTS source with a 5.1 soundtrack is playing, sur-round mode selection is automatic, regardless of whichmode may be set in an input’s menu. In other cases,the surround mode may be preset within the individualinput’s menu page. Each time the source is changed,the HS 100 will automatically change to the SurroundMode selected for that source.When a DVD is playing, there may be a number ofdifferent surround mode or audio options such asa full 5.1 soundtrack in one language, a 2.0 sound-track in different languages, or special commentaryor descriptive tracks for the vision-impaired. You mayselect these tracks, when available, during DVD play-back by pressing the Audio Button and thenusing the ‹/› Navigation Buttons A to choosefrom the options shown in the on-screen menu.19HS100 Integrated Home Theater System harman/kardon
