8 INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATIONInstallation and ConfigurationSAFETY NOTE: When making connectionsbetween any source components suchas AV receivers, surround processors ormultiroom controllers and the PA 4000,or when making any connections tospeakers, be certain that both the sourcedevice and the PA 4000 are turned off. Toensure that there will be no unwantedsignal transients that can damage equip-ment or speakers, it is always best tounplug all equipment before making anyconnections. Modern electronic productsoften have a “standby” mode that maybe activated even though the productmay appear to be turned off.Power Control ConnectionsThe PA 4000 features a built-in remote turn-onsystem that will automatically turn on any ofthe amplifier pairs in a number of ways.Depending on your specific application, the unitmay be turned on manually using the PowerSwitch 1, or via automatic sensing of eitheran input source or a low-voltage trigger signal. For manual operation, no special installation isrequired. For automatic turn-on, follow theinstructions below for the chosen triggermethod. The PA 4000 may also be controlledvia optional remote room keypads.Note that when the unit is operated in thestandard, four-output mode, each of the chan-nel pairs may be operated by the same triggermethod, or they may be turned on via differentmethods.Manual OperationTo operate the PA 4000 manually, with poweron/off controlled by the front-panel PowerSwitch 1, place the Power Control ModeSwitch · for any of the channels at the farright, under the phrase “ON/KEYPAD”. Whenthe switch is in this position, simply press thePower Switch 1 to turn the unit on or off.Remote Turn-On From an External DeviceUsing the Low-Voltage TriggerTo configure the PA 4000 so that any of thechannel pairs turn on automatically in responseto a low-voltage trigger signal, follow thesesteps:1. Place the Power Control Mode Switch· for either channel in the far left position,so that the switch is under the phrase“AC/DC TRIGGER”.2a.To trigger the amplifier from a device suchas a preamp surround processor or multi-room controller with a built-in trigger jack, connect one end of a cable with a 3.5mmmono mini-plug to the Trigger Jack fi onthe PA 4000. Connect the other end to amatching jack on the device that will pro-vide a 3-volt to 30-volt signal when the unitis to be turned on.or2b.To trigger the amplifier using the switchedAC accessory outlet on an AV receiver orother source device, purchase a small AC toDC power converter, as is typically used toreplace the batteries in portable electronicsdevices. Select a model that is capable ofdelivering 3 to 12 volts DC, and make cer-tain that one of the “tips” provided with theunit is a 3.5mm miniplug. Plug the trans-former end of the converter into theswitched AC output on the source product, and connect the 3.5mm miniplug to theTrigger Jack fi.NOTE: When connections are made to any ofthe PA 4000’s trigger jacks, make certain thatthe plugs are wired with the positive connec-tion to the plug’s tip and the negative connec-tion to the plug’s ring/sleeve.3. Press the Power Switch 1 in so that it isengaged, and note that the StandbyIndicator 3 will light for the channel pairsselected for trigger control operation. When the source control unit providing thepower is turned on, the PA 4000 will automati-cally turn on. When the source unit is turnedoff, the PA 4000 will return to the Standbymode after 10 to 15 minutes.Remote Turn-On Using Music SenseTo configure the PA 4000 so that any of thechannel pairs turn on automatically when theamplifier is receiving an audio signal, followthese steps:1. Connect the audio input as normal to theaudio Input Jacks ⁄›.2. For each channel pair that you wish to con-trol using an incoming audio signal, slide thePower Control Mode Switch · to thecenter position so that the switch is over thewords “MUSIC SENSE”.3. Press the Power Switch 1 in so that it isengaged, and note that the StandbyIndicator 3 will light for the channel pairselected for trigger control operation. In this configuration, the PA 4000 will automat-ically turn on whenever it is receiving an audioinput signal. The unit will return to the Standbymode 10 to 15 minutes after the audio signalstops.NOTE: When the PA 4000 is used in theBridged mode, use the Power Control ModeSwitch · marked “CH1” or “CH3” for Bridge1 or Bridge 2 configuration, respectively, tomake the settings for the desired turn-on mode.Keypad ControlThe PA 4000 may also be turned on or off,and the volume level to any of the channelscontrolled using optional compatible remotekeypads. To use the keypads, follow the instruc-tions supplied with them, and configure thePA 4000 using the following steps:1. Connect the remote room keypads to theKeypad In Jacks fl for the channel pairsthat will be controlled. When the unit isbeing operated in a bridged mode, connectthe keypads to either the CH1 or CH3 jack,as appropriate.2. Place the Power Control Mode Switch· for the channel pairs to be controlledremotely in the far right position, under thewords “ON/KEYPAD”.3. Press the Power Switch 1 in so that it isengaged and note that the Standby Indicatorwill light for the channel pairs selected forkeypad control operation.4.
