USR 1UniversalRemote ControlOWNER’S MANUAL®Power for the Digital Revolution.™Introduction2 INTRODUCTIONInstalling the Batteries3 INSTALLING THE BATTERIESHarman Kardon’s USR 1 is a full-featured, eight-device remote control that is specially designedas a replacement for the remote controls usedwith most Harman Kardon components manu-factured since 1995, along with some productsproduced before 1995. In addition to the codesused for operating Harman Kardon products, theUSR 1 may be programmed with the commandsfor most contemporary home entertainmentproducts, either from the extensive built-in codelibrary, or via a simple “learning” technique, regardless of brand. To further extend theflexibility of the USR 1, it may also be “taught”the codes for most infrared remote controls evenwhen they are not in the built-in library. Discretecontrols are available for operating the transportfunctions of CD, DVD and tape machines, andusers may create up to five macro command setsfor automating frequently repeated actions.NOTE: Although every effort has beenmade to include all features andfunctions available on the originalremotes, in some instances not allfunctions will be available. In caseswhere you still have the original, working remote, you may attempt toprogram individual button codes intothe USR 1 using the method describedlater in this manual. To install the batteries, first remove the coveron the back side of the remote by placing yourthumb on the round indented area on thebattery compartment cover. Gently push downand then up away from the remote. The coverwill slide off.Place the three AAA batteries in thecompartment as shown in the diagram below, being certain to observe the “+” and “–”polarity indications on the batteries and inthe bottom of the compartment. To replace the cover, place it in the groovededges of the compartment side. Then, gentlyslide the cover down towards you until youhear and feel the latch click as indication ofa secure closure. When the remote will not be used for asignificant length of time (over a few weeks)it is always a good idea to remove the batteriesto prevent the possibility of damage to theremote due to corrosion or leakage. When replacing batteries, always replace allthree at the same time and observe any localregulations that may apply in your area withregard to the proper disposal of used batteries. We recommend the use of high-quality alkalinebatteries in the USR 1.
