4 PROGRAMMING THE REMOTEProgramming the Remote Programming the Remotebuttons. If the unit turns off, the correctcode has been entered. Press the DeviceSelector again, and note that the red lightwill flash three times before going dark toconfirm the entry.5. If the device to be programmed in does NOTturn off, continue to enter three-digit codenumbers until the equipment turns off.At this point, the correct code has beenentered. Press the Device Selector againand note that the red light under theDevice Selector will flash three timesbefore going dark to confirm the entry.6. Try all of the functions on the remote tomake certain that the product operatesproperly. Keep in mind that manymanufacturers use a number of differentcombinations of codes, so it is a good ideato make certain that not only the Powercontrol, but the Volume, Channel andTransport controls work as they should. Iffunctions do not work properly, you mayneed to use a different remote code, orchoose the best remote code and programsome individual buttons as explained belowin the “Learning Codes” section.7. If a code cannot be entered to turn theunit off, if the code for your product doesnot appear in the tables in this manual,or if not all functions operate properly, tryprogramming the remote with the AutoSearch Method.For Harman Kardon products, consult theHarman Kardon Products code table to locateyour model. Program the code on the far leftafter pressing the Device Selector shown inthe column in which the code is found. Forexample, if you wish to program an AVR 85,you will need to press the AVR DeviceSelector and then program code 002 into theUSR 1 following the instructions shown. Theadditional codes listed to the right willautomatically be programmed into the CD,DVD and Tape Device selectors, respectively.You may reprogram those device selectorsto operate other products.Although every effort has been made toprogram the USR 1 with all of the functionsof the original Harman Kardon remotes, somefunctions may not be available, althoughindividual buttons can be programmed ifyou have the original working remote.Auto Search MethodIf the unit you wish to program into the USR 1is not listed in the code tables in this manual orif the code does not seem to operate properly,you may wish to program the correct code usingthe Auto Search method that follows:1. Turn on the product that you wish toprogram into the USR 1.2. Press the Device Selector for the type ofproduct to be entered (e.g., VCR, TV) and theMute button at the same time. Hold bothbuttons until the red light under the DeviceSelector stays lit. Note that the next stepmust take place while the red light is on, andit must begin within 20 seconds after thelight appears.3. Point the USR 1 towards the product to beprogrammed, and press either the ⁄ or ¤button. Each press will send out a series ofcodes from the remote’s built-in database.When the unit being programmed turns off,release the ⁄ /¤ button, as that is your indi-cation that the correct code is in use.4. Press the Device Selector, and note thatthe red light under the Device Selector willflash three times before going dark to con-firm the entry.5. Try all of the functions on the remote tomake certain that the product operates.Keep in mind that many manufacturers usea number of different combinations of codes,and it is a good idea to make certain thatnot only the Power control works, but alsothat the Volume, Channel and Transport5 PROGRAMMING THE REMOTE 6 PROGRAMMING THE REMOTEThe USR 1 is shipped from the factory alreadyprogrammed to operate most current-modelHarman Kardon AV receivers, processors, CDand DVD players, CD-R/RW decks and cassettedecks. However, for older Harman Kardonproducts, or if you find that the preset codesdo not properly operate your Harman Kardonproducts, or if you wish to use the remote withproducts made by manufacturers other thanHarman Kardon, you may use a variety ofmethods to program in the code informationfrom the USR 1’s built-in IR code library or todirectly program the codes from another remote.Before starting the programming process, pleasenote that throughout these instructions you willsee mention of the “Program LED”. This refersto the three-color LED that is at the very top ofthe remote between the ON and OFF buttons.Depending on the specific programmingoperation underway, this LED may light or flashin green, red or amber. During normal operationit will not light.Direct Code EntryThis method is the easiest way to program yourremote to work with different products.1. Use the tables in the following pages todetermine the three-digit code or codes thatmatch both the product type (e.g., VCR, TV),and the specific brand name. If there is morethan one number for a brand, make note ofthe different choices.2. Turn on the product you wish to programinto the USR 1.3. Press and hold both the Device Selectorfor the product you wish to control (e.g.,VCR, TV) and the Mute button at the sametime. When the Program LED turns amberand begins flashing, release the buttons.It is important that you begin the next stepwithin 20 seconds.4. Point the USR 1 towards the product to beprogrammed, and enter the first three-digitcode number using the Numeric Key |
