7CAUTION! BEFORE CLEANINGCHIMNEY AND SMOKE PIPE BESURE FIRE IS OUT AND INSIDE OFSTOVE IS COOL.Cleaning The Chimney and SmokePipeAvoid chimney fires. On a regularschedule, check for creosote and sootbuildup in the chimney, smoke pipe andspiral chamber. They must be keptclean. Keep a professional chimneysweep in mind if you have access toone.Steel brushes are the safest forcleaning metal surfaces. Salt solutionsand some chemicals may damagemetal surfaces. Do not overfire yourstove. Do not burn anything that com-busts in seconds. Excessive flue tem-peratures may result thereby ignitingcreosote. To clean the chimney, obtain a stiffbrush with an extendible handle andinsert the brush into the chimney fromthe top. Continue the brushing andsweeping downward until the entirelength of the chimney is cleaned. After cleaning the chimney, thedebris will be at the bottom of the chim-ney at the clean-out opening. Open theclean-out door and sweep the debrisout into a metal container. The smoke pipe from the stove tothe chimney can be cleaned with asteel brush.8. OperatingInstructions8.1 Starting a Coal FireTake about eight sheets of news-paper, crumble into balls and place ontop of grates. Next, lay fine kindling ontop of the paper. This kindling must bedry and no larger than 3/4" in diameter.Layer the kindling in a criss-cross fash-ion to allow good air flow. Open thedraft control fully and light the paperjust inside the door. Now, close theloading door and allow the kindling tocatch fire. After a few minutes, open theloading door an inch or two for a fewseconds before opening completely. This method will allow smoke to clearaway from the door opening before theloading door is completely opened.Add small, compact pieces of hard-wood when the kindling is burning hot.Keep the draft controls fully open toestablish a hot fire quickly. The ashdoor also may be opened during start-up to accelerate the initial burn. When a substantial bed of redwood coals are built up, start addingcoal (pea or nut is preferred to stovecoal for starting) small amounts at atime. Keep the draft control open.Continue adding small amounts ofcoal until there is a solid bed of burningcoal. Do not add too much at one time.Allow sufficient time between eachsmall loading (at least 5-10 minutes),so that each loading has time to ignitethoroughly before the next load is putin. When a substantial bed of burningcoals has been established, fill thestove to the top of the firebrick. A deepbed of coal always will burn more satis-factorily than a shallow bed. When most of the wood is burnedand the coal is completely ignited (usu-ally 5-10 minutes or less after filling thestove), the draft control should beturned down to the proper operatinglevel. (If the ash door has been opened,it must be closed to prevent overfiring, which can cause dangerously hightemperatures.)8.2 LoadingCoal should never be added unlessthere is a reasonable hot fire. The coalbed should be bright and vigorous. If the fire is burning hot and there isa deep bed of coals, full loads of coalcan be added at any time. However, ifthere is not a deep bed of coals, it isbest to add small amounts of coal atfirst.8.3 Increasing Heat From aLow FireEvery effort should be made not tolet a coal fire burn too long so that thefire has started to die. This will causethe reloading process to be muchlonger, and there is a good possibility oflosing the fire.Do not shake or stir with a low fire.Open the draft control wide or openthe ash cleanout door to get the maxi-mum draft.Run the stove with the draft controlor ash door fully open until the fire isreasonably hot.Start adding small amounts of coal. When the new coal is thoroughly ignit-ed or there is a substantial bed of hotcoals, the stove may be shaken thor-oughly. Be sure to shake down allashes (but do not overshake). After shaking, keep the bottomdraft control open until you are sure thefire is continuing to burn hot, then turnthe draft control down to the properoperating level. IF THE ASH DOORHAS BEEN OPENED, BE SURE TOSHUT IT (SERIOUS DAMAGE CANRESULT IF THE STOVE IS RUN FOREXTENDED PERIODS WITH THEASH DOOR OPEN).Count the exact number of turnsfrom full shut to the normal operatingpositions so that you can adjust thestove to the exact level of heat outputand length of burn you desire.Figure 7
