104RECEIVE AND TRANSMIT■ Functions for receiveD Squelch functionThe squelch function detects signals with voice com-ponents and squelches (mutes) unwanted signals,such as unmodulated beat signals. This providesquiet standby.When you need to receive weak signals, the squelchshould be turned OFF.• Push [SQL] to toggle the function ON or OFF.D Noise blankerThe noise blanker function reduces pulse type noise,such as that coming from engine ignitions.The noise blanker may distort reception of strongsignals. In such cases, the noise blanker should beturned OFF.• Push [NB] to toggle the function ON or OFF.D AGC OFF functionThe receiver gain is automatically adjusted accord-ing to the received signal strength with the AGC (Au-tomatic Gain Control) function, to prevent distortionfrom strong signals and to obtain a constant outputlevel.When receiving weak signals with adjacent strongsignals or noise, the AGC function may reduce thesensitivity. In this situation, the AGC function shouldbe deactivated.• Push [AGC] to toggle the function ON or OFF.D RF gain settingThe receiver gain can be reduced with the RF gainsetting. This may help to remove undesired weak sig-nals while monitoring strong signals.Usually the AGC function reduces the RF gain ac-cording to the receive signal strength and these weaksignals are removed. However, during periods of nosignals, these weak signals may not be heard.In such cases, the RF gain may be useful for settinga minimum level at which to hear signals.q Push [FUNC] then [RX] to call up the following dis-play.w Rotate the [CHANNEL] selector to set the desiredminimum cutting level.• “0” to “9” are available.• S-meter shows the minimum permited level.e Push [FUNC] or [CE] to exit the RF gain display.D Clarity controlVoice signals received from other stations may bedifficult to receive. This may sometimes happen if astation is transmitting slightly off frequency. In suchcases, vary the receive frequency only, using the[CLARITY] control.• Adjust [CLARITY] to improve the audio signal.[CLARITY]SQLD U P“SQL” appears when the squelch function is ON (noise is muted).RXD U P“NB” appears when the noise blanker is ON.NBRXAppears when the [AGC] switch is ON(AGC function deactivates).AGCAGC
