IMPORTANT: Make sure allequipment is turned off beforemaking any connections. For speaker connections, usea high-quality speaker wirewith polarity coding. The sideof the wire with a ridge or othercoding is usually consideredpositive (+) polarity.NOTE: If desired, consultyour local JBL dealer aboutspeaker wire and connectionoptions. The speakers have codedterminals that accept a varietyof wire connectors. The mostcommon connection is shownin Figure 1.To ensure proper polarity, connect each + terminal onthe back of the amplifier orreceiver to the respective +(red) terminal on each speaker,as shown in Figure 2. Connectthe – (black) terminals in asimilar way. See the owner’sguides that were includedwith your amplifier, receiverand television to confirmconnection procedures.IMPORTANT: Do not reversepolarities (i.e., + to – or – to +)when making connections.Doing so will cause poorimaging and diminished bassresponse..Figure 1Figure 2FINALADJUSTMENTSCheck the speakers forplayback, first by setting thesystem volume control to aminimum level, and then byapplying power to your audiosystem. Play a favorite musicor video segment and increasethe system volume control to acomfortable level.NOTE: You should hearbalanced audio reproductionacross the entire frequencyspectrum. If not, check allwiring connections or consultthe authorized JBL dealer fromwhom you purchased thesystem for more help. Both the amount of bass youhear and the stereo-imagequality will be affected by anumber of different factors, including the room’s size andshape, the constructionmaterials used to build theroom, the listener’s positionrelative to the speakers, andthe position of the speakers inthe room.Listen to a variety of musicselections and note the basslevel. If there is too much bass, move the speakers away fromnearby walls. Conversely, if youplace the speakers closer tothe walls, there will be morebass output.Nearby reflecting surfaces canadversely affect stereo-imagingquality. If this happens, tryangling the speakers slightlyinward toward the listeningposition until the optimumeffect is achieved.CARE OF YOURSPEAKER SYSTEMEach Project Array enclosurehas a finish that does notrequire any routine main-tenance. When needed, usea soft cloth to remove anyfingerprints or dust fromthe enclosure or grille.NOTE: Do not use any cleaningproducts or polishes on thecabinet or grille.WIRING THE SYSTEMSeparate and strip the ends ofthe speaker wire (not supplied)as shown. Speakers andelectronics terminals havecorresponding (+) and (–)terminals. Most manufacturersof speakers and electronics, including JBL, use red todenote the (+) terminal andblack for the (–) terminal. The (+) lead of the speakerwire is sometimes noted witha stripe or other demarcation. It is important to connect bothspeakers identically: (+) on thespeaker to (+) on the amplifierand (–) on the speaker to (–)on the amplifier. Wiring “out ofphase” results in thin sound, weak bass and a poorstereo image. With the advent of multi-channel surround soundsystems, connecting all ofthe speakers in your systemwith the correct polarityremains equally important inorder to preserve the properambience and directionalityof the program material.GENERAL CONNECTION INFORMATION10
