15Grounding InstructionsGeneral InformationThis Band Saw must begrounded while in use to protect the operatorfrom electric shock. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance forelectric current to reduce the risk of electricshock. This tool is equipped with an electric cordhaving an equipment-grounding conductor and agrounding plug that looks similar to the plug inFigure 15. The plug must be inserted into amatching outlet that is properly installed andgrounded in accordance with all local codes andordinances.Do not modify the plug provided. If it will not fitthe outlet, have the proper outlet installed by aqualified electrician.Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk ofelectric shock. The conductor, with insulationhaving an outer surface that is green with orwithout yellow stripes, is the equipment-grounding conductor. If repair or replacement ofthe electric cord or plug is necessary, do notconnect the equipment-grounding conductor to alive terminal.Figure 15Check with a qualified electrician or servicepersonnel if the grounding instructions are notcompletely understood, or if in doubt as towhether the tool is properly grounded.Repair or replace a damaged or worn cordimmediately.115 Volt OperationAs received from the factory, your bandsaw isready to run at 115-volt operation. This bandsawis intended for use on a circuit that has an outletand a plug that looks like the one illustrated inFigure 4. An adapter with a grounding ear(Figure 16) may be used temporarily to connectthis plug to a two-pole receptacle as shown(Figure 11), if a properly grounded outlet is notavailable. The temporary adapter should only beused until a properly grounded outlet can beinstalled by a qualified electrician. This adapteris not applicable in Canada. The green coloredrigid ear, lug, or tab, extending from the adapter, must be connected to a permanent ground suchas a properly grounded outlet box, as shown inFigure 5.Figure 16Extension CordsUse only three wire extension cords that havethree-prong grounding plugs and three-polereceptacles that accept the tool’s plug.Make sure the cord is in good condition andheavy enough to carry the current your bandsaw will draw. An undersized cord will cause adrop in line voltage, resulting in loss of powerand overheating. Table 1 shows the correct sizeto use depending on cord length and the ampererating on your machine’s nameplate. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller thegauge number, the heavier the cord.Repair or replace a damaged or worn cordimmediately.Power Extension CordCurrant(Amps)LinevoltageCord lengthin feetCord gauge(AWG)0-6 120 0 to 25 1825 to 50 1650 to 100 16over 100 146-10 120 0 to 25 1825 to 50 1650 to 100 14over 100 1210-12 120 0 to 25 1625 to 50 1650 to 100 14over 100 1212-16 120 0 to 25 1425 to 50 12over 50 not recommendedTable 1
