14MaintenanceMaintenanceCAUTION: Use protective gloves, goggles, footwear and any other protective clothing requiredby law for detergents mixed with the waste stream. The SJ-15 does not require a lot of maintenance, but itdoes require consistent maintenance. The frequency ofmaintenance varies depending on what is in the water.General maintenance consists of removal of sludgefrom the bottom of the wash tank and removal of anyfloating oil in the wash tank.WARNING: Shut down the SJ-15 and allow it to coolbefore performing any maintenance. Do not allowpump to run longer than 5 minutes without water.Disconnect all hoses to allow water to drain.Oil RemovalIf you have floating oil in the tank that needs to beremoved, shut down the SJ-15 and let the oil float to thetop. Remove the chip trays and use oil absorbingsponges (#21-185) which will absorb only oil. To re-usethe sponge, wring out the oil that is in the sponge into acontainer. Oil can be removed automatically when youhave the skimmer.Sludge RemovalRemove the lower 1-1/2” pipe cap on the side of themachine allowing all of the water to escape. Use asmall shovel to remove the residual sludge from thebottom of the tank. Removing the sludge and cleaningthe floor will greatly increase the life of the heatingelement.CAUTION: Disposal of contaminated water mustcomply with local and federal EPA regulations.Spray ArmThe spray nozzles should be checked regularly forobstruction and cleaned by removing and inserting aprobe. The spray arm nozzle angle on both spray armsshould be mounted in the same direction. The spin pino-rings should be replaced annually.FiltersWith the tank empty, clean the suction pump strainer.Clean when pressure gauge reads a 10 PSI decreasefrom start up pressure.Detergent and AdditivesManufacturer's detergents are the only detergentsapproved for use with our automatic parts washers. They are specially formulated with rust inhibitors andanti-foaming agents to optimize performance andminimize maintenance. The use of any other detergentduring the warranty period will void the warranty. To monitor the approximate concentration of detergentin the wash solution, periodically examine the washsolution in the sump chamber for the followingindicators:• Rust inside the machine: not enoughdetergent• Excessive foaming: not enough detergent• Thick, white residue on parts after washing:too much detergent. To maintain proper concentration under typical condi-tions, add detergent each month after cleaning thesump chamber. Follow recommended detergent quanti-ties. Use a pH kit to determine the proper amount ofdetergent to use. If you need help interpreting testresults, contact customer service.Rust Inhibitor AdditiveFactory detergents protect the entire inside of yourmachine against the degenerative effects of waterevaporation. A rust inhibitor additive actually evapo-rates with the water and continuously coats andprotects metal surfaces, even while your machine issitting idle.
