22Chapter 4: Performance Features and Safety Precautions14. HEPA filters are only effective for entrapment ofparticulate matter.15. The surface of the HEPA filter is fragile and should not betouched. Care must be taken to avoid puncturing theHEPA filter during maintenance. If you suspect that aHEPA filter has been damaged DO NOT use the enclosure;contact a local certification agency or Labconco.16. The HEPA filter will gradually accumulate airborneparticulate matter from the room. The rate of accumulationwill depend upon the cleanliness of the room air, and theamount of time the enclosure is operating. With normalusage, the HEPA filters will last two to five years beforerequiring replacement.17. Avoid direct exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation;NEVER work in the enclosure when the UV light is on.18. Ensure that the enclosure is connected to an electricalservice in accordance with local and national electricalcodes. Failure to do so may create a fire or electricalhazard. Do not remove or service any electricalcomponents without first disconnecting the filteredenclosure from electrical service.19. Increase the downflow velocity by adjusting the speedcontrol of the motorized impeller or change the HEPA filterwhen the downflow velocity falls below acceptable limitsestablished by your Safety Officer.20. Ensure only trained operators use the enclosure. New usersshould review the User’s Manual and become familiar withthe operation of the enclosure.21. Proper operation of the enclosure depends largely upon theenclosure location and the operator’s work habits. Theenclosure should be located away from traffic patterns, doors, fans, ventilation registers, fume hoods, and any otherair-handling device that could disrupt its airflow patterns.Consult Chapter 2: Prerequisites and Chapter 3: GettingStarted sections of this manual for further details.
