7Installing or removing the driver bit or drill bit(Fig. 9)Turn the sleeve counterclockwise to open the chuckjaws. Place the bit in the chuck as far as it will go. Turnthe sleeve clockwise to tighten the chuck. To remove the bit, turn the sleeve counterclockwise.Installing the hook (Fig. 10)The hook is convenient for temporarily hanging the tool. This can be installed on either side of the tool.To install the hook, insert it into a groove in the tool hous-ing on either side and then secure it with a screw. Toremove, loosen the screw and then take it out.Installing the bit holder (Optional accessory)(Fig. 11)Fit the bit holder into the protrusion at the tool foot oneither right or left side and secure it with a screw. When not using the driver bit, keep it in the bit holders.Bits 45 mm long can be kept there.OPERATIONCAUTION:• Always insert the battery cartridge all the way until itlocks in place. If you can see the red part on the upperside of the button, it is not locked completely. Insert itfully until the red part cannot be seen. If not, it mayaccidentally fall out of the tool, causing injury to you orsomeone around you.Hold the tool firmly with one hand on the grip and theother hand on the bottom of the battery cartridge to con-trol the twisting action.CAUTION:• Do not cover vents, or it may cause overheating anddamage to the tool. (Fig. 12)Hammer drilling operationCAUTION:• There is a tremendous and sudden twisting forceexerted on the tool/bit at the time of hole break-through, when the hole becomes clogged with chipsand particles, or when striking reinforcing rods embed-ded in the concrete.First, turn the action mode changing ring so that thearrow on the tool body points to the g marking. Theadjusting ring can be aligned in any torque levels for thisoperation.Be sure to use a tungsten-carbide tipped bit.Position the bit at the desired location for the hole, thenpull the switch trigger. Do not force the tool. Light pres-sure gives best results. Keep the tool in position and pre-vent it from slipping away from the hole.Do not apply more pressure when the hole becomesclogged with chips or particles. Instead, run the tool at anidle, then remove the bit partially from the hole. Byrepeating this several times, the hole will be cleaned outand normal drilling may be resumed.Blow-out bulb (optional accessory) (Fig. 13)After drilling the hole, use the blow-out bulb to clean thedust out of the hole.Screwdriving operation (Fig. 14)First, turn the action mode changing ring so that thearrow on the tool body points to the marking. Adjustthe adjusting ring to the proper torque level for your work. Then proceed as follows.Place the point of the driver bit in the screw head andapply pressure to the tool. Start the tool slowly and thenincrease the speed gradually. Release the switch triggeras soon as the clutch cuts in.CAUTION:• Make sure that the driver bit is inserted straight in thescrew head, or the screw and/or bit may be damaged.NOTE:• When driving wood screw, predrill a pilot hole 2/3 thediameter of the screw. It makes driving easier and pre-vents splitting of the workpiece.Drilling operationFirst, turn the adjusting ring so that the pointer points tothe m marking. Then proceed as follows.CAUTION:• Pressing excessively on the tool will not speed up thedrilling. In fact, this excessive pressure will only serveto damage the tip of your bit, decrease the tool perfor-mance and shorten the service life of the tool.• There is a tremendous force exerted on the tool/bit atthe time of hole break through. Hold the tool firmly andexert care when the bit begins to break through theworkpiece.• A stuck bit can be removed simply by setting thereversing switch to reverse rotation in order to backout. However, the tool may back out abruptly if you donot hold it firmly.• Always secure small workpieces in a vise or with a sim-ilar hold-down device.• If the tool is operated continuously until the battery car-tridge has discharged, allow the tool to rest for 15 min-utes before proceeding with a fresh battery.• Do not pull the switch trigger repeatedly when themotor is locked. It may damage the tool.Drilling in woodWhen drilling in wood, the best results are obtained withwood drills equipped with a guide screw. The guidescrew makes drilling easier by pulling the bit into theworkpiece.Drilling in metalTo prevent the bit from slipping when starting to make ahole, make an indentation with a center-punch and ham-mer at the point to be drilled. Place the point of the bit inthe indentation and start drilling.Use a cutting lubricant when drilling metals. The excep-tions are iron and brass which should be drilled dry.MAINTENANCECAUTION:• Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the bat-tery cartridge is removed before attempting to performinspection or maintenance.• Never use gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol or thelike. Discoloration, deformation or cracks may result. To maintain product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs, any other maintenance or adjustment should be per-formed by Makita Authorized Service Centers, alwaysusing Makita replacement parts. |
