10For European countriesFig.5When lowering the handle, the blade guard A risesautomatically. The blade guard B rises as it contacts aworkpiece. The guards are spring loaded so it returns toits original position when the cut is completed and thehandle is raised. NEVER DEFEAT OR REMOVE THEBLADE GUARDS OR THE SPRING WHICHATTACHES TO THE GUARD.In the interest of your personal safety, always maintaineach blade guard in good condition. Any irregularoperation of the blade guards should be correctedimmediately. Check to assure spring loaded returnaction of guards. NEVER USE THE TOOL IF THEBLADE GUARDS OR SPRING ARE DAMAGED,FAULTY OR REMOVED. DOING SO IS HIGHLYDANGEROUS AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUSPERSONAL INJURY.If the see-through blade guard becomes dirty, orsawdust adheres to it in such a way that the blade is nolonger easily visible, unplug the saw and clean the guardcarefully with a damp cloth. Do not use solvents or anypetroleum-based cleaners on the plastic guard. If the blade guard is especially dirty and vision throughthe guard is impaired, use the supplied socket wrench toloosen the hex bolt holding the center cover. Loosen thehex bolt by turning it counterclockwise and raise theblade guard and center cover. With the blade guard sopositioned, cleaning can be more completely andefficiently accomplished. When cleaning is complete, reverse procedure above and secure bolt. Do notremove spring holding blade guard. If guard becomesdiscolored through age or UV light exposure, contact aMakita service center for a new guard. DO NOTDEFEAT OR REMOVE GUARD.Fig.6Positioning kerf boardFig.7Fig.8This tool is provided with the kerf boards in the turn baseto minimize tearing on the exit side of a cut. The kerfboards are factory adjusted so that the saw blade doesnot contact the kerf boards. Before use, adjust the kerfboards as follows:First, unplug the tool. Loosen all the screws (2 each onleft and right) securing the kerf boards. Re-tighten themonly to the extent that the kerf boards can still be easilymoved by hand. Lower the handle fully and push in thestopper pin to lock the handle in the lowered position.Loosen two clamp screws which secure the slide poles.Pull the carriage toward you fully. Adjust the kerf boardsso that the kerf boards just contact the sides of the bladeteeth. Tighten the front screws (do not tighten firmly).Push the carriage toward the guide fence fully andadjust the kerf boards so that the kerf boards just contactthe sides of blade teeth. Tighten the rear screws (do nottighten firmly). After adjusting the kerf boards, release the stopper pinand raise the handle. Then tighten all the screwssecurely.CAUTION:• Before and after changing the bevel angle, alwaysadjust the kerf boards as described above.Maintaining maximum cutting capacityFig.9Fig.10This tool is factory adjusted to provide the maximumcutting capacity for a 190 mm saw blade. When installing a new blade, always check the lowerlimit position of the blade and if necessary, adjust it asfollows:First, unplug the tool. Push the carriage toward the guidefence fully and lower the handle completely. Use thesocket wrench to turn the adjusting bolt until theperiphery of the blade extends slightly below the topsurface of the turn base at the point where the front faceof the guide fence meets the top surface of the turnbase. With the tool unplugged, rotate the blade by hand whileholding the handle all the way down to be sure that theblade does not contact any part of the lower base.Re-adjust slightly, if necessary.CAUTION:• After installing a new blade, always be sure thatthe blade does not contact any part of the lowerbase when the handle is lowered completely.Always do this with the tool unplugged.Stopper armFig.11The lower limit position of the blade can be easilyadjusted with the stopper arm. To adjust it, move thestopper arm in the direction of the arrow as shown in thefigure. Adjust the adjusting screw so that the blade stopsat the desired position when lowering the handle fully.Adjusting the miter angleFig.12Loosen the grip by turning counterclockwise. Turn theturn base while pressing down the lock lever. When youhave moved the grip to the position where the pointerpoints to the desired angle on the miter scale, securelytighten the grip clockwise.CAUTION:• When turning the turn base, be sure to raise thehandle fully.• After changing the miter angle, always secure theturn base by tightening the grip firmly.
