2-20 Setup and OperationSETUP UTILITYThe Setup utility program allows you to enter system configuration information and controlspecial features of the system.NOTE: System ships from the factory with thecorrect system parameters for the configuration.Unless adding optional hardware, run the Setuputility only to customize the system, such assetting the security features.System configuration information is stored in nonvolatile memory. A nonvolatile memorydevice retains its data when system power is turned off. Nonvolatile memory in your systemis a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) chip backed up by a battery on thesystem board. The battery supplies continuous power to CMOS memory and maintainsconfiguration information when system power is off (see “Replacing the CMOS Battery” inSection 4).NOTE: NEC recommends that you print out orwrite down your current Setup parameters andstore the information in a safe place. This letsyou restore your system to the currentparameters if you ever need to replace thebattery. When to Use SetupThe Setup utility lets you view and set system parameters. Use the Setup utility program:n to set the time and date.n to update or check system parameters when you add or remove expansionoptions.n to change or set power management features.n to correct a hardware discrepancy when the Power-On Self-Test (POST) displaysan error message and prompts you to run Setup.n to check the installation of optional memory by comparing the amount of memoryinstalled with the amount of memory displayed by Setup.n to change certain system operating parameters, such as boot device sequence andkeyboard parameters.
