2-26 Setup and OperationSecurityThe Security screen lets you set a password to protect your data by allowing your system toboot only after you enter a password.When a system password is set, you must enter the password before you can enter Setup.This feature allows only an authorized user to change system parameters.You are not prompted to enter a password until you set an initial password. Your system isnot protected until you enter the initial password.See “Security Options” next, for instructions on setting and using the system password.SECURITY OPTIONSThe system supports two types of passwords for system security:n system passwordn keyboard lock hotkey.The following contains instructions for setting and using the password feature.Setting an Initial PasswordThe system password is set using Setup. When a system password is set, the password mustbe entered before entering Auto Setup. This feature allows only authorized access to systemparameters.Use the following procedures to set an initial password.1. Select the Security option in Setup.2. Select "Set Password" by pressing Enter.3. At the prompt, enter a password up to seven characters long. Another windowappears with a prompt to reenter your password for verification. Write yourpassword down and keep it in a secure place in case you forget it.4. Press Enter to return to the Security screen.5. Press ESC to save the changes and exit Setup.This password can also be used to lock the system at power-on. When you select “Enableon Boot”, each time you start up the NEC Versa, you’ll be prompted for a password.Using the System PasswordAfter setting the initial password, a password prompt appears each time the system is pow-ered on only if you select “Enable on Boot” in Setup. At the password prompt, enter yourpassword and press Enter to load your operating system or to enter Setup. The charactersentered do not appear on the screen.
