W415-1501 / E / 12.17.18EN38operationWhen a fire is burning, open the doors slowly to avoid drawing smoke into the room.Closing the doors too quickly after refuelling will reduce the firebox temperature and may result in anunsatisfactory burn.D. To maintain a brisk fi re, a hotcoal bed must be establishedand maintained.E. Slowly add larger wood (2x4 sizepieces). Lay the pieces lengthwisefrom side to side in the hotcoal bed with a shallow trenchbetween, so that the primary aircan flow directly into this trenchand ignite the fuel above.F. When the fire seems to be at itspeak, medium sized logs maybe added. Once these logs havecaught fire, carefully close thedoors.G. As soon as the doors are closed, you will observe a change inthe flame pattern. The fl ames will get smaller and lazier becauseless oxygen is getting into the combustion chamber. The flames, however, are more effi cient. The fl ames will remain lazy butbecome larger again as soon as the firebricks have been heatedthoroughly and the chimney becomes heated and provides a gooddraft.H. With the doors opened, the fi re is wastefully drawing heated roomair up the chimney which is certainly not desirable. Always operatewith the doors fully closed once the medium sized logs havecaught fire. You can now add larger pieces of wood and operate the appliancenormally. Once the appliance is entirely hot, it will burn veryeffi ciently with little smoke from the chimney. There will be a bed of hotcoals in the firebox so you can safely fi ll the fi rebox with wood to the topof the andirons. Can't get the appliance operating? Use more kindling and paper.Assuming the chimney and vent are sized correctly and there is sufficientcombustion air, the lack of sufficiently dry quantities of small kindling is theproblem. Thumb size is a good gauge for small kindling diameter. Can't get heat out of the appliance? One of two things may havehappened. The appliance door may have been closed prematurely andthe appliance itself has not reached optimum temperature.Re-open the door and/or draft control to re-establish a brisk fire. The otherproblem may have been wet wood. The typical symptom is sizzling wood andmoisture being driven from the wood. The only accurate way to determine wood moisture is with a moisture meter.Contact your local dealer for more information.OPERATING WITH DOOR CLOSEDOPERATING WITH DOOR OPENnote:Appliances surrounded by solid rock or brick will experience a longerheat up period as those materials absorb the heat being generated.
