Chapter 3 Hardware Overview© National Instruments Corporation 3-9 NI PXI-6682 Series User ManualTime-Synchronized Clock and Event GenerationThe NI PXI-6682 Series is capable of generating clock signals and triggersbased on the synchronized time base. The NI PXI-6682 Series keeps aninternal time base with 10 ns resolution that can be synchronized to GPS,IRIG-B, PPS, IEEE 1588, or freerunning. The NI Sync API allows you toschedule triggers to occur at an arbitrary future time (future time events),or clocks of arbitrary frequencies (with high and low times in multiples of10ns). It is also possible to program the start and ending time of a clockgenerated in this way.Refer to Table 3-6 for a list of destinations for synchronized time clocksand future-time events.Routing SignalsThe NI PXI-6682 Series has versatile trigger routing capabilities. It canroute signals to and from the front panel, the PXI star triggers, andthe PXI triggers. In addition, the polarity of the destination signal can beinverted, which is useful when handling active-low digital signals. The NI PXI-6682 also can route a 10 MHz clock from CLKIN to the PXI10 MHz reference clock (the NI PXI-6682H does not have a CLKINconnector). The NI PXI-6682 Series can route the TCXO, or PXI 10 MHzreference clock to CLKOUT.Figure 3-4 summarizes the routing features of the NI PXI-6682 Series. The remainder of this chapter details the capabilities and constraints ofthe routing architecture.
