14Figure 13 – Air FilterAIR FILTERCOVER3.5 CLEAN SPARK ARRESTOR SCREENThe engine exhaust muffler has a spark arrestor screen. Inspectand clean the screen at least once each year (Figure 14). If unit isused regularly, inspect and clean more often. If using the generator on any forest-covered,brush-covered or grass-covered unimprovedland, it must equipped with a spark arrestor. The spark arrestor must be maintained in goodcondition by the owner/operator.Clean and inspect the spark arrestor when the engine is at ambienttemperature as follows:Loosen the clamp and remove the spark arrestor screen fromthe muffler.Inspect screen and replace if torn, perforated or otherwisedamaged. DO NOT USE a defective screen. If screen is notdamaged, clean it with commercial solvent.Replace the spark arrestor and secure with the clamp.Figure 14 – Spark Arrestor ScreenARRESTORSCREENCLAMPSPARKARRESTORSCREEN3.6 GENERALThe generator should be started at least once every seven daysand be allowed to run at least 30 minutes. If this cannot be doneand the unit must be stored for more than 30 days, use thefollowing information as a guide to prepare it for storage.NEVER store engine with fuel in tank indoorsor in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas wherefumes may reach an open flame, spark or pilotlight as on a furnace, water heater, clothesdryer or other gas appliance.nAllow unit to cool entirely before storage.3.7 LONG TERM STORAGEIt is important to prevent gum deposits from forming in essentialfuel system parts such as the carburetor, fuel hose or tank duringstorage. To avoid engine problems, the fuel system should beemptied before storage of 30 days or longer, as follows:Remove all gasoline from the fuel tank.nDrain fuel into approved container outdoors, away fromopen flame. Be sure engine is cool. Do not smoke in thevicinity or light a cigarette.Start and run engine until engine stops from lack of fuel.Allow the engine to cool, then drain oil from crankcase. Refillwith recommended grade.Remove spark plug and pour about 1/2 ounce (15 ml) of engineoil into the cylinder. Cover spark plug hole with rag. Pull therecoil starter a couple times to lubricate the piston rings andcylinder bore.nAvoid spray from spark plug hole whencranking engine.Install and tighten spark plug. Do not connect the spark plugwire.Clean the generator outer surfaces. Check that cooling air slotsand openings on generator are open and unobstructed.Store the unit in a clean, dry place.MaintenanceNetzerotools.comNetzerotools.com
