92Technical NotesGetting Good Results with AutofocusAutofocus performs best when there is contrast between the subject and the back-ground and the subject is evenly lit. It does not perform well if the subject is very darkor moving rapidly, if there are objects of sharply differing brightness in the scene (e.g.,the sun is behind your subject and their features are in deep shadow), or if there areseveral objects at different distances from the camera at the center of the frame (e.g.,your subject is inside a cage).Appendix: Focus Lock, File Storage, and Date ImprintFocus LockFocus and exposure are locked when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, and remain locked while the shutter-release button is held in this position (focuslock). Focus lock can be used to take pictures of off-center subjects or in situationsin which the camera is unable to focus using autofocus.* Do not change distance between camera and subject while focus lock is in effect. If subject moves, release shutter-release button and focus again at new distance.AUTOAUTOAUTO 101010Position subject in center of frame andpress shutter-release button halfway.Focus1AUTOAUTOAUTO 101010Check that focus indicator glows steadi-ly, indicating that subject is in focus.Check focus indicator2AUTOAUTOAUTO 101010Focus and exposure are locked while shut-ter-release button is pressed halfway. *Recompose picture3Press shutter-release button rest of waydown to take picture.Take picture4
