28Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto ModeEasy auto modeAutomatic Scene SelectionThe camera automatically selects one of the following scenes when you point thecamera at a subject.• U Auto mode (general use)• e Portrait (A 36)• f Landscape (A 36)• h Night portrait (A 37)• g Night landscape (A 39)• i Close-up (A 40)• j Backlight (A 41)Notes about Face Detection• Depending on shooting conditions, such as whether or not the subject is facingthe camera, faces may not be detected.The camera may be unable to detect faces in the following situations:- When faces are partially hidden by sunglasses or other obstructions- When faces take up too much or too little of the frame• When there are multiple people in the frame, the face on which the camerafocuses depends on a variety of shooting conditions, such as whether or not thesubject is facing the camera.• In some cases, included those noted in “Autofocus performance” (A 25),autofocus may not perform as expected, and the subject may not be in focusdespite the fact that the double border glows green. When the camera isunable to focus, use another mode, such as A (auto) mode, focus on anothersubject positioned at the same distance from the camera as the actual portraitsubject, and use focus lock (A 29).
