[ 133 ]Reference information20• CERTIFICATION INFORMATION (SAR)THIS MODEL 8390 PHONE MEETS GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTS FOREXPOSURE TO RADIO WAVESYour mobile phone is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed andmanufactured not to exceed the limits for exposure to radio frequency(RF) energy set by Industry Canada. These limits are part of comprehensiveguidelines and establish permitted levels of RF energy for the generalpopulation. The guidelines are based on standards that were developed byindependent scientific organisations through periodic and thoroughevaluation of scientific studies. The guidelines include a substantial safetymargin designed to assure the safety of all persons, regardless of age andhealth. The exposure standard for mobile phones employs a unit of measurementknown as the Specific Absorption Rate, or SAR. The SAR limit set by theIndustry Canada is 1.6 W/kg* Tests for SAR are conducted using standardoperating positions with the phone transmitting at its highest certifiedpower level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determinedat the highest certified power level, the actual SAR of the phone whileoperating can be well below the maximum value. This is because thephone is designed to operate at multiple power levels so as to use only thepower required to reach the network. In general, the closer you are to abase station, the lower the power output of the phone. Before a phone model is available for sale to the public, compliance withthe Canadian Standard must be shown. The highest SAR value for thismodel phone when tested for use at the ear is 1.05 W/Kg. While there maybe differences between the SAR levels of various phones and at variouspositions, they all meet the government requirement for RF exposure.* The SAR limit for mobile phones used by the public is 1.6 watts/kilogram(W/kg) averaged over one gram of body tissue. The standard incorporatesa substantial margin of safety to give additional protection for the publicand to account for any variations in measurements. SAR values may varydepending on national reporting requirements and the network band. ForSAR information in other regions please look under product informationat www.nokia.com.
