General description 9Meridian SL-100 M2000 Digital Telephone Reference ManualPowering RequirementsVoiceThe M2000 Digital Telephones are loop–powered. Loop power uses a30-V DC source and assumes 3500 ft. (915 m) maximum loop lengthof 24 AWG polyvinylchloride (PVC) (0.5 mm) standard twisted wire withno bridge taps. Cables longer than 3500 ft. could exceed the maximum15.5 dB loss at 256 KHz. For loop lengths longer than 3500 ft., the loopshould use 24 AWG or larger wire with polyolefin, polyethelene, orTeflon insulation. The Handsfree unit, which is integrated in the M2112, requires anauxiliary power supply. The auxiliary power derives from the 20-V accloset power supply (QUT1) or a local plug–in transformer over aseparate pair of wires. The closet power supply must not be furtheraway from the handsfree unit than the maximum allowable loop lengthfor loop–powering. If the auxiliary power supply fails, the handsfree feature does notoperate. However, all other loop-powered functions remain operational. In case of a general ac power failure, the telephones remain operational(without the handsfree features) only if the Meridian SL-100 systemuses a backup battery.WARNING - Possibility of equipment damageDataAn auxiliary power supply/converter is needed in addition to the powerfrom the loop. A 60 Hz, 110-V AC or a 50 Hz, 220-V AC plug–in powersupply/converter provides nominal voltages of +5 V, +12 V, and -12 V.The power supply/converter connects to the back of the telephonethrough a 5-pin power connector. If the power supply/converter fails, theM2112 cannot process data calls.Alerting tone characteristicsThe M2000 digital telephone series provides four alerting tones and abuzz sound. The system controls the cadence of the ringing by sendingtone-ON and tone-OFF messages to the telephone. The SL-100WARNINGTelephone set damageDo not plug a M2000 Digital Telephone into a walljack wired with -48V for 2500 telephone sets. Thiscauses permanent damage to the M2000 telephone.
