Taking still pictures62Taking still pictures3 ShootingWhen to use the monitor and viewfinderUnderstanding the characteristics of the monitor and viewfinder will helpyou to decide which to use in certain situations.Precautions of taking pictures using the viewfinderEven if the subject seems well positioned in the center when viewed throughthe viewfinder, the composition of the resulting picture may differ from theintended composition. This phenomenon is what is known as “parallax”.Parallax is caused by the difference in the position of the subject seenthrough the viewfinder and the position of the subject captured by the lens. Here is an example of how parallax works. The closer the subject, the greater the parallax. For macro shooting, therefore, we recommend using the monitor. The camera records a wider area than seen in the viewfinder. When shooting, you can turn off the monitor.g “Turning off the monitor (MONITOR OFF)” (P.51)Viewfinder MonitorAdvantagesCamera shake does not occureasily and subjects can be seenclearly even in dark places.Little battery power is used. You can check the picturearea that the camera actuallyrecords more accurately.DisadvantagesWhen close to a subject, theimage in the viewfinder is alittle different from the picturethat the camera actuallyrecords.Camera shake can occur easilyand subjects may be difficult tosee in bright/dark places. Themonitor uses more batterypower than the viewfinder.Best useUse the viewfinder for generalsnapshots (landscapepictures, casual shots, etc.).Use when taking macropictures or close-ups of aperson or flower.Subject seenthrough the viewfinderSubject capturedby the lens
