OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSContinuous operation with enginecoolant temperature above or belowthe engine coolant temperaturespecifications listed in “CoolingSystem” on page 5-15 can damagethe engine.Engine ShutdownBefore Stopping the EngineNOTEDO NOT shut off the engine im-mediately. A hot engine stores agreat amount of heat and it doesnot cool down immediately after itis shut off. Always cool the enginedown before shutting it off. You willgreatly increase its service life.Idle the engine at 1,000 RPM for fourminutes. Then low idle for 30 secondsbefore shutdown. This will allowcirculating coolant and lubricating oilto carry heat away from the cylinderhead, valves, pistons, cylinder liners, turbocharger, and bearings. This wayyou can prevent engine damage thatmay result from uneven cooling.NOTEFor engines equipped with an elec-tronic control module (ECM) en-sure the key switch is turned OFFfor a minimum of 70 seconds priorto disconnecting the continuous(unswitched) battery power supply. If the unswitched battery powersupply is disconnected in less than70 seconds after the key switchis turned OFF, active fault codesand incorrect ECM information canoccur.Turn the ignition switch to the OFFposition. If the engine does notshut down, refer to “TroubleshootingSymptom” (Section TS) in theappropriate maintenance manual.(12/2014) Y53-1185-1B1 4-114
