When you pressthe shutter button halfway indark places or other situations, an AF areawider than usual appears and the AF assistlamp 1 turns on.• Be sure of the following points when theAF assist lamp is in use.– Do not look in to the AF assist lampclosely.– Do not cover the AF assist lamp withyour fingers.• In simple mode [ ], the setting on the[AF ASSIST LAMP] is fixed to [ON].• In [SCENERY], [NIGHT SCENERY],[FIREWORKS] and [SELF PORTRAIT] inscene mode (P51), the setting on the [AFASSIST LAMP] is fixed to [OFF].• When you do not want to use the AFassist lamp (e.g. when you take a pictureof a subject in a dark place), set the [AFASSIST LAMP] to [OFF]. In this case, itbecomes difficult to focus on the subject.• When the AF assist lamp turns on, the AFarea is displayed with a size wider thanusual and set only to a point on the centreof the screen.The shutter speed can be automaticallyadjusted. However, you can take picturesbrighter than usual by changing the longestshutter speed. This mode is especiallyeffective when you want to record both thebackground and the subject brightly.You can select the slow shutter from 1/8second, 1/4 second, 1/2 second and 1second.• Usually, set to [1/8–] to take pictures.• When you set the shutter speed longer on[SLOW SHUTTER], we recommend usinga tripod because jitters become easier tooccur.AF Assist Lamp[AF ASSIST LAMP]ON The AF assist lamp turns on underlow light conditions.
