Finned copper tube gas boilers & water heaters – Boiler Manual4RATINGS & CAPACITIESBefore undertaking the installation of the Futera XLF Series boiler/water heater check the rating plate to ensure that the unit has beensized properly for the job. The AHRI specify the equivalent amountof direct cast iron radiation that the unit can supply under normalconditions. Also ensure that the unit has been set up for the type ofgas available at the installation site. Other important considerationsare the availability of an adequate electrical supply, fresh air forcombustion and a suitable chimney or vent system.BOILER/WATER HEATER LOCATION1. This boiler/water heater is suitable for indoor and outdoorinstallations. Locate the boiler/water heater in an areathat provides good access to the unit. Servicing mayrequire the removal of jacket panels. Allow the minimumclearances between adjacent construction and the boiler/waterheater as listed in Table 1.Service clearances are not mandatory, but arerecommended to ensure ease of service should it berequired.Table 1 Required ClearancesFromClearance tocombustible surfacesServiceclearancesInches mm Inches mmTop 6 153 30 762Back 6 153 24 610Left side 6 153 12 306Right side 6 153 12 306Front 6 153 30 7622. An optimum site will be level, central to the piping system, closeto a chimney or outside wall and have adequate fresh air forcombustion. Ensure that the boiler/water heater is level fromfront to back and from side to side. Use metal shims to level theboiler/water heater. Electrical and electronic components mustalso be protected from exposure to water during operation andmaintenance. DO NOT install this boiler/water heater in alocation that would subject any of the gas ignition componentsto direct contact with water or excessive moisture duringoperation or servicing.3. Ensure that the floor is structurally sound and will support theweight of the boiler/water heater. The Futera XLF may be installed directly oncombustible flooring, but never on carpeting.4. Locate the boiler/water heater in an area that will prevent waterdamage to adjacent construction should a leak occur or duringroutine maintenance. If such a location doesn’t exist, asuitable drain pan that’s adequately drained must be installedunder the unit.5. DO NOT place this boiler/water heater in a location thatwould restrict the introduction of combustion air into the unitor subject it to a negative pressure, see “GENERAL VENTINGGUIDELINES”.6. NEVER place this boiler/water heater in a locationthat would subject it to temperatures at or near freezing, see the “FREEZE PROTECTION” section.Never store combustible materials, gasoline or anyproduct containing flammable vapors or liquids in thevicinity of the boiler/water heater. Failure to complywith this warning can result in an explosion or firecausing extensive property damage, severe personalinjury or death!COMBUSTION AIR & VENTILATIONThis boiler/water heater must be supplied withcombustion air in accordance with Section 5.3, Airfor Combustion & Ventilation, of the latest revisionof the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA54 and all applicable local building codes. Canadianinstallations must comply with CAN/ CGA B149.1or .2 Installation Code for Gas Burning Appliancesand Equipment, or applicable provisions of thelocal building codes. Failure to provide adequatecombustion air for this boiler/ water heater can resultin excessive levels of carbon monoxide which can resultin severe personal injury or death! To operate properly and safely this boiler/water heater requires acontinuous supply of air for combustion. NEVER store objects onor around the boiler/water heater!Combustion air contaminated with fluorocarbonsor other halogenated compounds such as cleaningsolvents and refrigerants will result in the formationof acids in the combustion chamber. These acids willcause premature failure of the boiler/water heatervoiding the warranty! If the boiler/water heater is operated while the buildingis under construction it MUST be protected fromwood, concrete, sheet rock and other types of dust.Failure to properly protect the unit from constructiondust will damage the unit voiding the warranty!Buildings will require the installation of a fresh air duct or othermeans of providing make-up air if the intake air optionisn’t used. Any building utilizing other gas burning appliances, afireplace, wood stove or any type of exhaust fan must be checked foradequate combustion air when all of these devices are in operationat one time.Sizing of an outside air duct must be done to meet the requirementsof all such devices.Never operate the Futera XLF in an environmentsubjected to a negative pressure unless it is DirectVented. Failure to comply with this warning can resultin excessive levels of carbon monoxide causing severepersonal injury or death!
