For all side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipmentinstalled in every dwelling, building or structure used in wholeor in part for residential purposes, including those owned oroperated by the commonwealth and where the side wall exhaustvent termination is less than seven (7) feet above finished grade,in the area of the venting, including but not limited to decks andporches, the following requirements shall be satisfied:d. INSTALL ATION OF CARBON MONOXIDED ET ECTO R S. A t the tim e o f instal lat i o nof the side wall horizontal vented gas fuelede q u i p m e n t , t h e i n s t a l l i n g p l u m b e r o rgasfitter shall observe that a hard wired carbon monoxidedetector with an alarm and battery back-up is installedon the floor level where the gas equipment is to beinstalled. In addition, the installing plumber or gasfitter shall observe that a battery operated or hard wiredcarbon monoxide detector with an alarm is installedon each additional level of the dwelling, building orstructure served by the side wall horizontal ventedgas fueled equipment. It shall be the responsibility ofthe property owner to secure the services of qualifiedlicensed professionals for the installation of hard wiredcarbon monoxide detectors.i. In the event that the side wall horizontally vented gasfueled equipment is installed in a crawl space or anattic, the hard wired carbon monoxide detector withalarm and battery back-up may be installed on the nextadjacent floor level.ii. In the event that the requirements of this subdivision cannot be met at the time of completion of installation, theowner shall have a period of thirty (30) days to complywith the above requirements; provided, however, thatduring said thirty (30) day period, a battery operatedcarbon monoxide detector with an alarm shall beinstalled.e. APPROVED CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS. Eachcarbon monoxide detector as required in accordance with theabove provisions shall comply with NFPA 720 and be ANSI/UL 2034 listed and IAS certified.f. SIGNAGE. A metal or plastic identification plate shall bepermanently mounted to the exterior of the building at aminimum height of eight (8) feet above grade directly in linewith the exhaust vent terminal for the horizontally ventedgas fueled heating appliance or equipment. The sign shallread, in print size no less than one-half (1/2) inch in size,“GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW. KEEP CLEAR OF ALLOBSTRUCTIONS”.g. INSPECTION. The state or local gas inspector of the sidewall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment shall notapprove the installation unless, upon inspection, theinspector observes carbon monoxide detectors and signageinstalled in accordance with the provisions of 248 CMR5.08(2)(a)1 through 4.Improper venting can result in excessive levels of carbonmonoxide which can cause severe personal injury ordeath!2. Exemptions — The following equipment is exempt from248 CMR 5.08(2)(a) 1 through 4:a. The equipment listed in Chapter 10 entitled “Equipment NotRequired To Be Vented” in the most current edition of NFPA54 as adopted by the Board; andb. Product Approved side wall horizontally vented gas fueledequipment installed in a room or structure separate from thedwelling, building or structure used in whole or in part forresidential purposes.3. M A N U FACT U R E R R EQ U I R E M E N TS — G A SEQUIPMENT VENTING SYSTEM PROVIDED.a When the manufacturer of Product Approved side wallhorizontally vented gas equipment provides a venting systemdesign or venting system components with the equipment,the instructions provided by the manufacturer for installationof the equipment and the venting system shall include:i. Detailed instructions for the installation of the ventingsystem design or the venting system components; andii. A complete parts list for the venting system design orventing system.4. M A N U FACT U R E R R EQ U I R E M E N TS — G A SEQUIPMENT VENTING SYSTEM NOT PROVIDED.a When the manufacturer of a Product Approved side wallhorizontally vented gas fueled equipment does not providethe parts for venting the flue gases, but identifies “specialventing systems”, the following requirements shall be satisfiedby the manufacturer:i. The referenced “special venting system” instructions shallbe included with the appliance or equipment installationinstructions; andii. The “special venting systems” shall be Product Approvedby the Board, and the instructions for that system shallinclude a parts list and detailed installation instructions.5. A copy of all installation instructions for all Product Approvedside wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment, all ventinginstructions, all parts lists for venting instructions, and/or allventing design instructions shall remain with the appliance orequipment at the completion of the installation.Improper venting can result in excessive levels of carbonmonoxide which can cause severe personal injury ordeath!MACODE-3
