4Hotplate burners1 Some models have a glass lid over the hotplate. If it is not open, lift it up at the front. There is a safety device which cuts off the gas to thehotplate burners if the lid is accidentally closed witha burner on. The gas supply is restored when the lidis raised. The toughened glass lid is not intended as awork surface and should not be used for thispurpose. Before closing the lid remove all pans from thehotplate and ensure that all hotplate control knobsare in the off position.2 The drawing by eachknob indicates whichburner that knob controls.Press the igniter button, and push in and turn a knobto the large fl ame symbol( ). Alternatively light with amatch. If a burner fl ame goes out, turn the control knob offand leave it for one minute before relighting it.3 Adjust the fl ame height tosuit by turning the knob.On this cooker the lowposition is beyond high, notbetween high and off. Thesmall fl ame marks the ‘lowposition’.Turn the knob towards it after the contents of a panhave boiled.4 Make sure fl ames are under the pans. Using alid will help the contents boil more quickly.Pans and kettles with concave bases or down turnedbase rims should not be used.5 Simmering aids, such as asbestos or meshmats, are NOT recommended. They will reduceburner performance and could damage the pansupports.6 Avoid using unstable and misshapen pans thatmay tilt easily and pans with a very small basediameter e.g. milk pans, single egg poachers. Theminimum pan diameter recommended is 120mm.Pans and kettles with down turned base rims shouldnot be used.Note.If you leave the gas taps in the ‘On’ positionwhen the lid has been closed, unburnt gas willescape when the lid is raised. When the spark button (IGN) is pressed, sparkswill be made at every burner, this is normal. You can remove the burner parts forcleaning, see the ‘Cleaning your cooker’section of these instructions. You should wipe the enamel top surface of thecooker around the hotplate burners as soon aspossible after spills occur. Try to wipe them offwhile the enamel is still warm.
