Chapter 4: Commissioning the Autopilot 8-4-9ST290 Instrument System Owner’s Handbook4.3 Seatrial CalibrationWhen you have completed the dockside calibration, you must thencomplete the setup by carrying out a short sea trial, using the Pilot SeatrialCalibration mode. There are two stages in the Seatrial.1. Compass calibration:• Setting automatic deviation correction.• Aligning the compass heading.2. Optimizing the autopilot to your boat:• Automatically, using an AutoLearn function, on 150G and 400Gautopilot systems.• Manually on T150 and T400 (non-GyroPlus) autopilot systems.Note: For more information about pilot calibration, refer to Section 8,Chapter 5 of this handbook.Seatrial safetyIMPORTANTYou can return to hand steering at any time during the seatrial bypressing STANDBY, on the Pilot Keypad. To ensure the seatrial is carried out safely and that results are valid, youshould perform the initial seatrial only:• When you have successfully completed the dockside calibration.• In waters that are clear of any obstructions with plenty of clear spaceto maneuver.• In conditions of light wind and calm water, so you can assessautopilot performance without the influence of strong winds or largewaves. Before you start your seatrial, ensure you have switched on the necessaryancillary equipment, such as a GPS (to provide course over ground(COG), speed over ground (SOG) and latitude (LAT) data), or a speed log(to provide speed through the water). This information will help theautopilot achieve best performance.EMC conformanceAlways check the installation before going to sea to make sure that it isnot affected by radio transmissions, engine starting etc.81183_2 S8.book Page 9 Tuesday, May 6, 2003 9:08 AM
