Be sure to inspect the vent system for properinstallation at initial start-up; and at least annually thereafter.Refer to the Venting section of this manual (pg. 11) for moreinformation regarding vent system inspections.PROPANE MODELS – Propane must be used with greatcaution.• It is heavier than air and will collect first in lower areasmaking it hard to detect at nose level.• Make sure to look and smell for propane leaks beforeattempting to light appliance. Use a soapy solution to checkall gas fittings and connections. Bubbling at a connectionindicates a leak that must be corrected. When smelling todetect a propane leak, be sure to sniff near the floor too.• Gas detectors are recommended in propane applicationsand their installation should be in accordance with themanufacturer's recommendations and/or local laws, rules, regulations or customs.• It is recommended that more than one method be used todetect leaks in propane applications.IF PROPANE IS PRESENT OR SUSPECTED:• DO NOT attempt to find the cause yourself;• DO NOT try to light any appliance;• DO NOT touch any electrical switch;• DO NOT use any phone in your building.• Leave the building immediately and make sure that every-one else leaves also.• Leave the doors open for ventilation and contact the gassupplier, a qualified service agency or the fire department.• Keep the area clear until the service call has been made, the leak is corrected, and a qualified agency has determinedthe area to be safe. Both propane and natural gas have an odorant added to helpdetection. Some people may not physically be able to smellor recognize this odorant. If unsure or unfamiliar about thesmell associated with propane or natural gas, ask the gassupplier. Other conditions, such as "Odorant Fade", whichcauses the odorant to "fade", or diminish in intensity can alsohide or camouflage a gas leak.Water heaters utilizing propane are different from natural gasmodels. A natural gas heater will not function safely onpropane and vice versa. Conversion from natural gas topropane (or vice versa) must be done by a qualified servicetechnician. To avoid possible equipment damage, personalinjury or fire: DO NOT connect this water heater to a fuel typenot in accordance with unit data plate. Use propane forpropane units, natural gas for natural gas units. These unitsare not certified for any other type fuel.Propane appliances should not be installed below-grade (forexample, in a basement) if such installation is prohibited byfederal, state and/or local laws, rules, regulations or customs.General Safety Precautions!WARNING!WARNING!DANGER!DANGER!WARNING!DANGER!DANGER!Vapors from flammable liquidswill explode and catch firecausing death or severeburns.Do not use or store flammableproducts such as gasoline sol-vents or adhesives in the sameroom or area near the waterheater.Keep flammable products:1.
