SECTION C: Installation28Outdoor InstallationOutdoor models are self-venting when installed withthe optional factory-supplied outdoor vent kit. Addi-tional vent materials are required as outlined in theOutdoor Vent Kit instructions. A special vent cap andair intake elbow are offered in accordance with CSArequirements. These must be installed directly on thevent pipe as illustrated in Fig. 26.Care must be taken when locating the heater outdoors, because the flue gases discharged from the vent capcan condense as they leave the cap. Improper locationcan result in damage to adjacent structures or buildingfinish. For maximum efficiency and safety, the follow-ing precautions must be observed:1. Outdoor models must be installed outdoors. Theymust use the outdoor vent cap and air intake elbowavailable from the manufacturer (sales order op-tion D-11).2. Periodically check the venting system. Theheater’s venting areas must never be obstructed inany way and minimum clearances must be ob-served to prevent restriction of combustion andventilation air. Keep area clear and free of com-bustible and flammable materials.3. Do not locate adjacent to any window, door walk-way, or gravity air intake. The vent must belocated a minimum of 4 ft horizontally from suchareas.4. Install above grade level and above normal snowlevels.5. Vent terminal must be at least 3 ft above anyforced air inlet located within 10 ft.6. Adjacent brick or masonry surfaces must be pro-tected with a rust-resistant sheet metal plate.NOTICE: Condensate can freeze on the vent cap. Fro-zen condensate on the vent cap can result in a blockedflue condition.NOTICE: The vent cap and air intake hood must befurnished by the heater manufacturer in accordancewith its listing (sales order option D-11).Fig. 26: Outdoor VentingFreeze ProtectionWhen installing this heater in an outdoor location thatis susceptible to freezing, sales option B-22 should beinstalled to energize the heater pump at a present out-door air temperature and circulate water to reduce thepossibility of freezing and damage to the heat ex-changer or headers.ControlsWARNING: Installation, adjustment and service ofheater controls, including timing of various operatingfunctions, must be performed by a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier. Failure to do so mayresult in control damage, heater malfunction, propertydamage, personal injury, or death.WARNING: Turn off the power to the heater beforeinstallation, adjustment or service of any heater con-trols. Failure to do so may result in heater malfunction, property damage, personal injury, or death.CAUTION: This appliance has provisions to be con-nected to more than one supply source. To reduce therisk of electric shock, disconnect all such connectionsbefore servicing.CAUTION: Risk of electric shock: More than onedisconnect switch may be required to de-energize theequipment before servicing.
