25Installer action is required to electrically enable yourheater to operate after making the power connections. You must make a closed contact connection on Stage1 connector of the Central Point Wiring (CPW) boardfor temperature control connections. This will be donebased on the controller option selected with yourheater order.1. For Pool and Closed-Loop Water-Source HeatPump applications, your heater should be config-ured to operate in an on-off firing mode. Thismeans that you will connect a single-pole controlto stage one of the CPW board. Then jumper theremaining firing stages. For example, if yourheater is a Model 1532A, you will jumper stagestwo, three and four. Then your heater will either beon at full fire, or it will be off.2. For 2-stage controller connections, connect eachstage of the control to the corresponding stage ofthe CPW board in the heater, i.e., stage 1 of theheater to stage 1 of the control; stage 2 of theheater to stage 2 of the control, as shown in Fig.21 and 22. Set the operating control to the set-point at which you want the heater to maintain.Ensure that the sensing bulb of the control is at thepoint in the system that will best maintain the tem-perature you want. For example, when you areheating a tank of water, you want the operatingcontrol sensor bulb in the tank.3. For single-stage controller connections, attach thestage 1 connections on heater 1 to the tankstat perFig. 23.Heater must be electrically grounded in accordancewith the NEC, and CSA C22.1 C.E.C. Thestage-selector terminals are for the remote tank con-trol through the heater’s 24 VAC transformer. DO NOTattach any voltage to the stage-selector terminals. Before starting the heater, check to ensure proper volt-age to the heater and pump.VentingGeneralAppliance CategoriesHeaters are divided into four categories based on thepressure produced in the exhaust and the likelihood ofcondensate production in the vent.Category I – A heater which operates with a non-pos-itive vent static pressure and with a vent gas tempera-ture that avoids excessive condensate production inthe vent.Category II – A heater which operates with a non-pos-itive vent static pressure and with a vent gas tempera-ture that may cause excessive condensate productionin the vent.NOTE: If any of the original wire supplied with theheater must be replaced, it must be replaced withsimilar sized 105°C wire or its equivalent.NOTE: For 87%-efficiency boilers, see specialinstructions on page 39.CAUTION: Proper installation of flue venting is criti-cal for the safe and efficient operation of the heater.
