(b) EXEMPTIONS: The following equipment is exempt from248 CMR 5.08(2)(a)1 through 4:1. The equipment listed in Chapter 10 entitled "EquipmentNot Required To Be Vented" in the most current edition ofNFPA 54 as adopted by the Board; and2. Product Approved side wall horizontally vented gas fueledequipment installed in a room or structure separate from thedwelling, building or structure used in whole or in part for res-idential purposes.(c) MANUFACTURER REQUIREMENTS - GAS EQUIP-MENT VENTING SYSTEM PROVIDED. When themanufacturer of Product Approved side wall horizontallyvented gas equipment provides a venting system design orventing system components with the equipment, the instruc-tions provided by the manufacturer for installation of theequipment and the venting system shall include:1. Detailed instructions for the installation of the venting sys-tem design or the venting system components; and2. A complete parts list for the venting system design or vent-ing system.(d) MANUFACTURER REQUIREMENTS - GAS EQUIP-MENT VENTING SYSTEM NOT PROVIDED. When themanufacturer of a Product Approved side wall horizontallyvented gas fueled equipment does not provide the parts forventing the flue gases, but identifies "special venting sys-tems", the following requirements shall be satisfied by themanufacturer:1. The referenced "special venting system" instructions shallbe included with the appliance or equipment installationinstructions; and2. The "special venting systems" shall be Product Approvedby the Board, and the instructions for that system shallinclude a parts list and detailed installation instructions.(e) A copy of all installation instructions for all ProductApproved side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equip-ment, all venting instructions, all parts lists for ventinginstructions, and/or all venting design instructions shallremain with the appliance or equipment at the completion ofthe installation.GAS PRESSURE SUPERVISIONThe Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires listed highand low gas pressure switches (manual reset) for any modelwith a maximum firing input greater than 1,000,000 Btu/Hr inaccordance with 248 CMR 7.04(11)(d).A gas pressure regulator (field supplied) is required in thegas train ahead of the heater, for heaters having input ratesgreater than 1,000,000 Btu/Hr, in accordance with 248 CMR7.04 Figure 3B requirements.The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires compliancewith regulation 248 CMR 4.00 and 5.00 for installation ofthrough – the – wall vented gas appliances as follows:(a) For all side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipmentinstalled in every dwelling, building or structure used inwhole or in part for residential purposes, including thoseowned or operated by the Commonwealth and where theside wall exhaust vent termination is less than seven (7) feetabove finished grade in the area of the venting, including butnot limited to decks and porches, the following requirementsshall be satisfied:1. INSTALLATION OF CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS.At the time of installation of the side wall horizontal ventedgas fueled equipment, the installing plumber or gasfitter shallobserve that a hard wired carbon monoxide detector with analarm and battery back-up is installed on the floor levelwhere the gas equipment is to be installed. In addition, theinstalling plumber or gasfitter shall observe that a batteryoperated or hard wired carbon monoxide detector with analarm is installed on each additional level of the dwelling,building or structure served by the side wall horizontal vent-ed gas fueled equipment. It shall be the responsibility of theproperty owner to secure the services of qualified licensedprofessionals for the installation of hard wired carbonmonoxide detectorsa. In the event that the side wall horizontally vented gasfueled equipment is installed in a crawl space or an attic, thehard wired carbon monoxide detector with alarm and batteryback-up may be installed on the next adjacent floor level.b. In the event that the requirements of this subdivision cannot be met at the time of completion of installation, the ownershall have a period of thirty (30) days to comply with theabove requirements; provided, however, that during saidthirty (30) day period, a battery operated carbon monoxidedetector with an alarm shall be installed.2. APPROVED CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS. Eachcarbon monoxide detector as required in accordance withthe above provisions shall comply with NFPA 720 and beANSI/UL 2034 listed and IAS certified.3. SIGNAGE. A metal or plastic identification plate shall bepermanently mounted to the exterior of the building at a min-imum height of eight (8) feet above grade directly in line withthe exhaust vent terminal for the horizontally vented gasfueled heating appliance or equipment. The sign shall read,in print size no less than one-half (1/2) inch in size, "GASVENT DIRECTLY BELOW. KEEP CLEAR OF ALLOBSTRUCTIONS".4. INSPECTION. The state or local gas inspector of the sidewall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment shall notapprove the installation unless, upon inspection, the inspec-tor observes carbon monoxide detectors and signageinstalled in accordance with the provisions of 248 CMR5.08(2)(a)1 through 4.Important Instructions for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts57
