Chapter 3.23Setting up Red Hat Directory Server onRed Hat Enterprise LinuxInstalling and configuring Red Hat Directory Server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux has three majorsteps:1. Install OpenJDK 1.6.0.2. Install the Directory Server packages.3. Run the setup-ds-admin.pl script. This is where all of the information about the new DirectoryServer instance is supplied.WARNINGIf Directory Server is already installed on your machine, it is extremely important that youperform a migration, not a fresh installation. Migration is described in Chapter 6, Migratingfrom Previous Versions.NOTEBefore beginning the installation process, make sure that your system meets therequirements in Section 2.3, “Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5”.NOTERed Hat Directory Server is also supported running on a virtual guest on a Red HatEnterprise Linux 5 virtual server. There are three interactive ways of setting up Directory Server: express, typical, and custom. These setup types provide different levels of control over the configuration settings, such as portnumbers, directory suffixes, and users and groups for the Directory Server processes. Expresshas the least amount of input, meaning it uses more default or randomly-generated settings, whilecustom allows the most control over the configuration by having the user supply a lot of configurationinformation. These setup types are described more in Table 1.2, “Comparison of Setup Types”. Formost deployments, the typical installation type is recommended.NOTEThere is a fourth setup option called a silent installation. This provides two ways ofperforming the setup without user interaction, either by passing arguments in thecommand-line with the setup-ds-admin.pl script or to use a file with settings alreadydefined. This is extremely useful for doing large numbers of Directory Server instances, since it does not require any user involvement after the packages are installed. Silentinstallations are explained more in Section 5.5.1, “Silent Setup for Directory Server andAdministration Server”.
