Solving Problems6.5Tips for Avoiding Paper JamsBy selecting the correct paper types, most paper jams can beavoided. If a paper jam occurs, follow the steps outlined in“Clearing Paper Jams” on page 6.3.• Follow the procedures on page 3.2. Ensure that theadjustable guides are positioned correctly.• Do not overload the tray.• Do not remove the paper from the tray while printing.• Flex, fan, and straighten the paper before loading.• Do not use creased, damp, or highly curled paper.• Do not mix paper types in a tray.• Use only recommended print materials. See “PaperSpecifications” on page 8.1.• Ensure that the recommended print side of print materials isfacing up in the tray.Solving Print Quality ProblemsDirt inside of the printer or improper paper loading may reduceprint quality. See the table below to troubleshoot problems.Problem SolutionLight or fadedprintIf a vertical white streak or faded area appears on thepage:• The toner supply is low. You may be able totemporarily extend the toner cartridge life. See“Redistributing Toner” on page 5.2. If this does notimprove print quality, install a new toner cartridge.• The paper may not meet paper specifications (forexample, the paper is too moist or too rough). See“Paper Specifications” on page 8.1.• A combination of faded or smeared defects mayindicate that the printer needs cleaning. Seepage 5.7.Toner specks The paper may not meet specifications (for example,the paper is too moist or too rough). See “PaperSpecifications” on page 8.1.Dropouts If generally rounded, faded areas occur randomly onthe page:• A single sheet of paper may be defective. Tryreprinting the job.• The moisture content of the paper is uneven or thepaper has moist spots on its surface. Try a differentbrand of paper. See “Paper Specifications” onpage 8.1.• The paper lot is bad. The manufacturing processcan cause some areas to reject toner. Try a differentkind or brand of paper.• The toner cartridge may be defective. See “Verticalrepetitive defects” on the next page.• Change the printer option and try again. Go toprinter properties, click Paper tab, and set papertype to Thick.
